If, however, they offer Barney as a throw-in (since Detroit needs help on defense, yeesh) for a Garza trade they might be able to sweeten the pot.

Gaza and Barney to Detroit makes a lot of sense for both sides. That is the most likely way I see Barney being traded due to Barney unique situation, elite d and contract but low offense.

Cubs righty-loaded lineup doing something against Santana.

Travis Wood keeping the damage to a minimum so far and matching Santana.

Lets see if scrapping the curveball for now and throwing more splitters mean more successs today for Shark.

If he can sort of hybridize the splitter and the curveball and set up a power-curve that might be pretty cool and effective.

I think just controlling the fastball and slider with that splitter would be enough to be a solid pitcher. I wouldn't mind him bringing the curveball out again down the road, but for now he needs to just focus on putting some solid outings together.

It seemed like he didn't have a cutter before so maybe he learned that from Kerry Wood trying to teach him how to throw Mariano Rivera's cutter. I'm sure the pitching staff are keeping an eye on him though, the last start it seemed like he was going fastball/changeup for the first 4-5 innings before busting out the slider the second time through. If they have a good gameplan and he can locate the pitches then all is well.
