The Chicago Cubs have their eye on San Diego Padres first baseman Adrian Gonzalez, according to ESPNChicago’s Bruce Levine.
Gonzalez recently had his $6.2 million option for 2011 picked up by the Padres, and will be a free agent after the upcoming season. With the small market Padres, the team will not be able to afford his expected $15-$20 million per year salary.
Padres’ GM Jed Hoyer recently said that he expects the first baseman to be with the Padres in 2011, and will listen to offers for him. Gonzalez’s agent, John Boggs, fully expects to gauge his market value in free agency next winter.
“The question is, what are we going to seek. We’re going to seek market value for Adrian Gonzalez. Obviously I don’t think the Padres will dedicate that much of their salary structure to one player.”
The Cubs are looking for a power first baseman and will look at players such as Adam Dunn (may be too expensive), Carlos Pena, Lance Berkman, Adam LaRoche and Nick Johnson if a trade for Gonzalez is not possible.
That's from ProRumors. Source is Levine.
If they did acquire him, they better have an extension worked out ahead of time. And it better be long-term.
