Chatbox posts have nothing to do with ad $ or posting stats. While the chatbox may take away some posting, it does allow everybody bs around with each other and get to know each other better as opposed to doing so with only posts. Quicker way to get acclimated to each other.
Plus once you're doing reading the new posts, you may jump off the site. With a chatbox you may stay on longer and chat with people, or even keep the tab open with a chat and do other stuff. It's a way to retain activity.
