I've lived six weeks of my life there and I can tell you that (as a tourist) urban China is safe. China has us out-populated by 1 billion and we still have more people in our prison system. Contrary to what the news wants you to believe, China is a restrictive country but it's not outwardly oppressive. There are no bread lines, there are no guards asking you for your passport every 100 yards. Communism is just a label that has given way to capitalism. So as long as you're not trying to smuggle bibles into the country or running around in the streets waving a US flag, you'll be fine.

Seriously, unless you're asthmatic, go...

...but bring extra TP with you and buy some diapers if you intend to take taxi rides, cuz you'll probably shit your pants a few times.
