It's put up or shutup time. Year 2 was nice but hardly much more than average. If this is like his ND career, then he will take off. Not even UGA's defense was able to cover him that season.

"Kelce is the greatest TE to ever play the game and it isn't even close."

Tony Gonzalez says hello:

15,127 yards, 1,325 receptions, TDs-111
I have to agree with this. Also Gates is in the conversation. Blatant disrespect to say it isn't even close.

If Kmet doesn't produce this year, then he's JAG and the Bears need to look into drafting his replacement.

Also... Mike Ditka is basically the father of the TE position...

The modern day NFL tight end was truly born in the 1961 draft when the Chicago Bears drafted Mike Ditka with the fifth overall pick. The Pittsburgh standout became the first tight end to put up real receiving numbers. Mike Ditka retired with 427 receptions, which were Hall of Fame numbers at the time.

Travis Kelce is the only TE in the history of the game to have six straight seasons of 1,000 or more yards receiving. Greg Olsen was the first to do it with three straight.

That's how much the TE position has developed.

I noticed in his college highlights he could catch the ball in traffic and muscle it away from defenders. Much harder to do consistently in the pros.

I coulda sworn someone posted his PFF average separation yards and they were good. I can't say I've noticed it in games.

Fields is going to have to gamble a bit and trust him if he's covered. Sometimes I feel like Justin was hesitant to throw unless someone was wide open.

60 catches for over 600 yards is good for a second year player. Especially with such ongoing chaos between changing of the QBs last year.

You didn't see it in games because when he was wide open, the pocket had already collapsed and the QB didn't have his eyes down the field

I agree, but the lack of TDs, like you pointed out in your article, is glaring. He was the 1st overall TE taken in his class and we should expect a lot more this year.

I mean, at some point it'd be nice if a player the Bears drafted truly earned a second contract.?

Totally agree but Nagy was obsessed with running the jump ball to Jimmy Graham.

Nagy's lack of creativity was evident by running his entire red zone offense through that formation Graham isolated and throw the fade to him. When that didn't work he was helpless.
Average TD production out of the TE position is six, that's a low bar.

I'm not implying Kelce isn't in the conversation for best TE of all-time, but your statement: "Kelce is the greatest TE that has ever played the game and it's not even close" was a little ignorant.

You have to include Tony Gonzalez, Jason Witten, Antonio Gates, Shannon Sharpe, Rob Gronkowski all in the conversation.

I agree about Nagy. And Nagy was a huge problem.

But it seems every year the fan base zeros in on one guy as the primary problem...and then is surprised when the problems seem to run deeper the next year.

I seem to remember Kmet with some key drops and just falling down a few times...etc. But I might have to watch some of last year's games again.

As of right now barring injury Kelce is running away with it. Gonzalez has longevity on his side, Gronk playoff records.

After that the rest of them were great for their era but don't have the production that we're seeing now.

He will have a great season. I expect him to be the most improved player not named Fields.
It's going to be a Kansas City Chiefs type of offense. Lighter on the production but it will run through Mooney and Kmet like it ran through Hill and Kelce.

If those two produce at a high level say 1,200 and 800 and you spread the ball around between the rest of the guys with 600 here 500 there and some complimentary RB yards things will be just fine on offense.

am I to understand Kmet is a failure because he didn't get 1000 yards in a season? he's a TE, not a WR. temper your expectations, people.

I don't know his stats but if he got 600 yards last season that's actually pretty good. lol
