Wow what a chode. I hope he doesnt get drafted this year or next.

So the tactic is to strong arm people into drafting you. Im sure that will go over well. Not sure he even deserves to be in the NFL.

His agent must be top notch to either a) suggest it or b) let him put that out there.

God speed La'el Collins career.

The thinking is this: But for the murder investigation in which he's not officially a suspect, he would have been drafted in the first round and made millions. His stock is as low as it can get because of this investigation. He is confident that he can clear his name, and once he does, he thinks he will attain first round status again. The problem is that he can't clear his name until Monday at the earliest, since that is when the police will interview him. By then, the draft is already over. He believes that he is 100% innocent and that his name will be cleared. So rather sign a contract fit for a 3rd rounder or less, he will forgo that money and be drafted in the first round next year and more than make up for it. He is taking a risk, but if he truly is 100% innocent, then it may be a risk worth taking.

He asked to be able to drop out of the draft and enter the supplemental draft. Why the NFL denied that I don't understand. Either he is involved in his girlfriends murder and an NFL team drafting him would be a PR disaster or he is not involved and he is a first round talent getting hosed for millions. Seems like letting the situation get resolved would have been best for everyone. Once again, **** the NFL brass.

True. But I think the bigger risk in this case lies with the team that takes him. Think if he was involved and goes to prison there goes you second or third pick. not to mention the money they paid him.

if he is truly innocent then I feel for him, but like you said no way to prove that now.

I think it is a good move by him. Consider ... he was slated to be taken top 15, and then his ex-girlfriend gets murdered (make the assumption that he didn't call for a hit on his ex), now his stock plummets and he loses millions.

Why would you take a contract in the 4th to 7th for 4 years when you can honestly tell people that you will not sign a contract if not drafted in at least the 3rd, you clear your name with the murder, and come back in 2016 and get a better contract?

We don't complain when people sit out when they HAVE a contract, but call Collins names when he doesn't have a contract?

Put yourself in his shoes (again ... assuming you nor him actually was involved in the murder). How would you feel when you lost millions over something that you had nothing to do with and then be tied to a cheap contract for the next 4-5 years (with all the wear and tear of those seasons)?

I think it was a good idea because it tells teams not to draft him between rounds 4 through 7. It is also a risk, however. If he doesn't get drafted and tries for next year, he will not have faced any competition for over a year which will tremendously hurt his stock.

In the end, I think a team will pick him up in the third.

Unfortunately, the NFL can't randomly change their rules for one player. It could cause lots of problems in the future.

The rest, I agree with completely and can't understand how people are making fun of him.

Exactly, this would have been a perfect situation for the supplemental draft. I'm guessing the reason why the NFL didn't allow him in the supplemental draft is because they don't want to set a precedent where players get to drop out at the last minute for whatever they feel like. But this is a pretty unique situation.

Let's just say that the Bears pick him in the 3rd, Pace walks to Cliff and says, "you got all the contracts finished? Store that 3rd round contract for a month or two".

Sure, they lose a 3rd round pick but the money is basically safe.

If he doesn't get drafted and re-enters, he will not have played in over a year against any competition. That will hurt him even more.

People will say he can just go to the CFL? Why would he want to do that? He is putting himself at huge risk of an injury. In the CFL, an average player's salary is around $80,000, an eighth of a NFL fourth round player's salary. Plus, if the victim's baby is his son, he is going to have a hard time raising him with a CFL salary, instead of an NFL one. We all know by now that he does care about the money and I think he just needs to accept if and when he is drafted.

Can the dude do that?

Yes. If a team drafts him, then he can just refuse to sign. The team will lose his rights after one year, and he can reenter the draft next year.

So medium risk high reward potential?

It will probably hurt him, but to what degree is anyone's guess. Mike Williams (the WR from USC) sat out an entire year, then was drafted by Detroit in the first round, 10th overall.

When's the likelihood that is going to happen again? Not very.

Where is Williams' now? Out of the league! A huge bust with no Pro Bowls or anything.
