I'd hope for more than that from our #10 pick. LaPorta might be an unfair comparison as a rookie cause the only other serious receiving threat they had was St. Brown but I would be looking for rookie Odunze numbers. ~700 yards and but hopefully 5+ TDs. Feels like Cole is going to be relegated to a pretty small role here focused on blocking.
He's still a rookie TE not WR and Kmet still should get 500+ yards as well. Put them together and 1000+ yards 8+ TDs is elite production out of the TE position.

That's being conservative.

What are we basing 500 yards for Kmet on?

Cause we know Johnson told Loveland that he sees him like he saw LaPorta in Detroit. As a rookie in Detroit, LaPorta was targeted 120 times, almost 50 more times than the next highest on their team. Brock Wright was targeted 14 times and had 91 yards and a TD on the season to LaPorta's 889 and 10 TDs.

In 2024 though LaPorta took a big step back because Jameson Williams took a big step forward. LaPorta was 3rd on the team in targets, 9 behind Williams, and dropped to 726 yards and 7 TDs. Brock Wright had16 targets, 100 yards and 2 TDs on the season.

We all know Kmet is a lot better than Wright so it's unrealistic to expect Kmet be at 16 targets and 100 yards on the season. But until we see otherwise, I'm guessing Kmet will be playing the Wright role while Loveland takes on the LaPorta role and there's a pretty steep discrepancy between the two's receiving production. We even know Kmet is coming off a terrible year. We can blame the offense as a whole or Caleb Williams but maybe Caleb just didn't think Kmet was a very good receiver because he's not? If Kmet was that good then the Bears could have easily taken a high-upside defender at #10 but they didn't.

Im basing it off the fact that Johnson isn't going to ignore that Kmet is a good player just because they drafted another one. Plus Kmet is a veteran leader that's making big dollars. No reason not to use him.

Johnson wants the offense to be unpredictable based on personnel so both TEs will play together a lot and both will get targets. Likely over 60-80 targets each and catch 70-80% of those targets each...

They can easily get 500+ yards under those circumstances.

He just needs to gain muscle!….Can’t lift weights cause he just had shoulder surgery. That’s my main issue, combined with a pretty good edge prospect staring them in their face that went the next pick to the 49ers.

I understand the scheme fit, I just think this was horrible value for the 10th pick. If he was there in round 2 and slipped because of the injury then sure.

All that said they can get some good players in round 2 and I’m excited for that! I heard Will Johnson has chronic knee issues so I’m sure he is the top guy in Poles board.

Meh. Like I said, I'll believe it when I see it. Kmet is just a guy as a receiver. He's not dynamic and plays smaller than he is. Hopefully this will light a fire under him to go kick some peoples' asses, but I wouldn't expect any more than 400 yards from him. Not when we'll have Moore, Odunze and Loveland there eating up targets. Kmet can be valuable as a blocker though and a guy who will beat you in the passing game if you don't account for him. Johnson can certainly use him and Loveland together to exploit matchups which is the name of the game.

He will have no trade value because he will be an obvious cut. Almost no guaranteed money and one year left.
With Loveland on a rookie scale deal we won't have to cut him. He carries a $3.2 dead cap hit if he's cut next year, then $1.6 after that; not too bad.

Why would you keep a blocking TE at $12m/year? When it's an easy out with little dead cap?

I doubt they keep him, but mediocre/lower level TE's make like 4-6m. If ben johnson wants another good one its not a crazy added price, I just dont see the value.

I wouldn't, I'm just saying they wouldn't have to cut him necessarily. But I would agree that Kmet's days are numbered and he's not likely to be with the team in 2026 now. He's not even some elite blocker or anything.

Disagree that he won’t have any value. The bears either would trade him or keep him. They wouldn’t cut him outright

From nfl.com’s scouting report:

“Will get ragdolled at point of attack by power rushers,”

Can’t think of a better guy to help out Braxton Leno when it’s time to protect the QB.

Is it nice that his route tree is 3-levels? Sure. It’s also great that he can punk off-ball LBs who try to cover him in man. Compared to Warren, who’s a 1 year wonder, he’s got production.

Oh, and he’s preinjured too! He underwent shoulder surgery in January on his AC Joint dislocation in the right shoulder, and expected recovery time 6 months.

Plenty of TEs can already do these things, and you didn’t need to drop a top 10 pick, but if the coach wants him that bad, sure, flush the honeymoon/good will down the toilet now, why wait for preseason?

Keep him as the most expensive #2 TE in the league rather than free up $9m with very little dead cap?

Don't think so.
