This was a cop killer Not a compound full of women and kids.

Even so, the first priority should have been to detain and arrest him.

No one is going to shed a tear for a murderer who resisted arrest and died in the process, however, they should always try to arrest the person first. That said I haven't seen/heard anything to say the cops did something wrong.
