Could bears keep Fields and still draft Williams?

This honestly is what I hope happens unless the Bears get a 1st for Fields or they trade down and build around Fields.

#1 The precedence of having a QB learn from behind a starter seems to garner results.
#2 we have no idea if Williams has NFL durability and having two QBs with similar skill sets allows for continuity if one is injured
#3 allows for a look at Fields under a new OC and one heckuva a preseason competition
#4 would be interesting if an OC worked in some plays with both Fields and Williams in on the same play

The trade value of Fields is too high to spend to keep Fields around and too needed if we get another QB.

If you push all in on Williams you accept the risk around him and also push all in on offense to lessen the risk.
But this is the Bears. We could get Williams, claim the offense is fine, give Williams no starter reps in the offseason. Then make him the starter 3 weeks into the season with a week of starter reps.

Even if they did, Bears would still Bear and pick the wrong one

If nothing else, this rumor being floated of keeping Fields may be just to drive his price up to potential teams. If they can get this story getting traction it drives up the value of the #1 pick and Fields to maximize your options out there

I wanted to draft a backup QB at minimum. I was thinking of doing that in the 2nd round though. I think taking Caleb and keeping Fields is just not a good situation. I feel it’ll bring unnecessary attention to the team and ultimately divide the locker room. No. 1 picks don’t sit. It’s better to rip the bandaid off and be done with it if we take a QB there. There won’t be any uncertainty of who is leading the team.
