OK...I was checking goaltender stats tonight...and here's how the two compare so far --

Based on number of wins, Crow is ahead of Niemi. Stats are in this order (since I couldn't preserve the formating) --

Looks to me like, even with Niemi being incredibly hot the last month or two, Crawford still leads in most categories...

GP GS W L OT SA GA GAA Sv Sv% SO

Crawford 43 41 26 13 4 1151 95 2.26 1056 .917 3

Niemi 46 46 26 16 3 1326 107 2.37 1219 .919 5

While Craws name is slowly coming up in Vezina discussions Niemi's is not.

That's all I care about.

Niemi and Crawford are similar in a few ways this year. One being both have been playing on clubs who had rocky starts to the season and who are now hitting their strides. Numbers and stats don't tell those stories.

Don't care though Niemi is and always will be a part of the Cup winning team. For that reason I will always be a fan of his. But damn I am loving Crawford. If I did have to chose btw the two to be the franchise goalie going forward I would pick Crawford.

You know last year before the season I wanted Crawford to be the backup behind Huet. I was happy to eat a lot of crow as Niemi was huge in the playoffs. But I always felt Crawford would be great with a shot. Back when he shutout the Ducks a couple years back. The kid has game. And he is really showing something out there. So I'm happy with him this year, hopefully he will be here for years to come.

Crawford is twice the goalie that Niemi was at this point. I had that feeling but nothing to go off last year cause they let Crawford come out of the dungeon only a few times.

There really is no argument who is the better goaltender IMO, Niemi handling the puck resembled a grandma. Grant it one has a ring and the other doesn't, but I truly believe the outcome would have been the same with almost any goalie other than Huet.

If Crawford was in net last year instead of niemi I think he would have done better then niemi did. With the team that was on the ice there's no question even a sack of potatoes could have gotten the job done. Huet was intact worse then a sack of potatoes.

Post Niemi's year with the hawks, that's the one that is I think more relevant since he was a rookie then and Corey is a rookie now.

one thing is not mentioned here. I love Niemi but he played behind a better team and started goal tending months later where the team had already jelled, so he did not see alot of work load. Crawford got to start A month in and under a team that lost 33% of its roster and has them with in a few points of the Divison lead. I would have to go with Crawford.

Disagree.

Even thought Corey is playing spectacular this season there are two differences then last years. One, Corey had an additional year of conditioning in the AHL and two, he has been getting some terrific mentoring from Turco I am told. Add in the coaching skills of Waite and Flaherty and it is proving to be a successful year for him. I don't think the level of success enjoyed this year would have worked as well last season.

Crawford beat Niemi straight out of camp last year. Due to Cap reasons ONLY, Niemi was kept in Chicago. So I 100% disagree with you.

Niemi's numbers were also helped last year by the team he was playing behind. Something Crawford has NOT had the benefit of this year. Our lack of depth on the 3rd and 4th lines have not only increased the Qaulity shots our goal tenders face, but clearly the amount as well.

IMO EIther goalie would have won the Cup behind this team last year. Would Crawfrods numbers have been better than Niemi, it's a guessing game.

That wouldn't work because they are completely different teams. Niemi faced a league low shots against last year. Crawford has no where had the same pleasure this year.

Agree. My purpose in creating this thread was to simply compare goaltender performances this season. I was actually a bit surprised....with Niemi playing so well the past 4-6 weeks, I had assumed his stats would surpass Crow's in nearly every category. That is clearly NOT the case...

Niemi had serious issues at the start of the season, as did the Sharks. Neither of the two goalies were good. Niemi's GA was above 5 at one point I think.

As his team has caught fire, so has he. Similar to here last year.
