I know things have been slow and we've seen two divisional opponents begin dealing, but I fully expect the shitstorm to fly in this upcoming week.

It's a hell of a mess as well as a hell of a mess to be in.

Should be a fun few weeks, if nothing else.

He is reporting a 5% cap raise...which (current 56.8) would make it 59.64; this is more than Bettman was approximating (2mil. increase).

I can't imagine a team giving Niemi more than what the 'Hawks can offer. However, if that is actually the case, and Niemi leaves, it's not a total loss. The Blackhawks would get good draft compensation for Niemi's loss and would help build from within and keep the talent pool high. In addition, the Blackhawks brass has discussed more than once they want to model their franchise off of Detroit. The past 15 years or so of Detroit dominance has been marked by an excellent team mentality, defense, and OK goal-tending (though Hasek was a great player). They had goalies who stepped up at the right time; such as Mike Vernon. It can be done with a decent goal-tending, and if the 'Hawks were unfortunate enough to lose Niemi, the core of the team will get us back in the playoffs. It's the goalie's job to just keep the team in the game. I hope Chicago does not go into panic mode if Niemi is traded; nor would I want the management to spend frivolously on yet another ridiculous goalie salary a la Huet.

i dont think the hawks will panic either...just like you said, the wings were built around DECENT goaltending like osgood....we are still good enough to make the playoffs, and will just need the goalie to make the easy saves and steal a game or two

Might have our first one now - Byfuglien, Eager, and Sopel to Atlanta in return for picks and prospects.

This is not Eklund, but I have to share this for sheer hilarity. One idiotic blogger (I refuse to post the html because it doesn't deserve the hits, truly):

I do have one source believe it or not and he has forwarded me a notification that the Bruins are interested in Brian Campbell. Could the Hawks ship Campbell and perhaps 2 first round picks this year for the Bruins number 2 overall pick and perhaps a player? It’s doubtful but wouldn’t it be nice if Stan Bowman pulled off something like that to land Tyler Seguin or Taylor Hall.

Please. It is more than just doubtful.

Sorry to bump this for a brief public service announcement. This is why you do not trust the gang at HockeyBuzz:

HockeyBuzz.com - John Jaeckel - Be Stan Bowman For A Day

"Apparently the Hawks have officially signed Swedish center/wing Niklas Persson out of the KHL. The 31 year old Persson projects as a 3rd line center or wing with superior defensive qualities and outstanding hands. If he is as good as advertised, this could free the Hawks up, perhaps, to make some bigger deals."

So if he fills the 3rd line C spot (and im still considering it a big IF),

Persson signed with the Tampa Bay Lightning today - from a much more reliable source, Kevin Allen.

Don't take this personally, GB. HB is known for jumping the gun on rumors a la 2004 U.S. Presidential Election (if my memory serves).
