Do they help you stay motivated at crossfit?

And what if you show up as a grad student who hasn't left an office chair in 3 months? Will you die?

You'll have a hard time gaging an entire cult of personal trainers. You'll find good ones and bad ones. Some will work for you, others will be a total douche and make you feel like shit.

Just talk to the gym before you decide. Most people sign up with a goal in mind, before ever talking with the coaches and trainers(which is a recipe for failure, if you know that you need extra motivation).

For many years I was a serious lifter spending 2 hours a day in the gym 5 days a week. I kept up a very fast pace with little rest between sets. I set goals and worked hard towards them. I was always strong but wondered how functionally strong I really was, partially because the exercises I was doing has a single purpose

I have met Crossfit guy and seen their workouts on video. Once I saw them I realized I and millions of other lifter have been doing it wrong all these years. They have proven it's not big muscles but being functionally strong. The pace, variety and intensity of Crossfit is the difference and the best would drive professional football players into the ground. Visit a center, talk to the lead instructor, take a class and see if it's for you. I wish there was Crossfit when I was training

My cousin lost 65 pounds by moving a stationary bike in front of his tv. True story.

Crossfit is good and bad. It's as safe/dangerous as the person coaching/leading the class. I have a couple friends who are legit Olympic style power lifters who teach Crossfit and their classes are great because they are safe and they stress safety while lifting, etc. Other Crossfit gyms are awful and dangerous because they are lead by people who got certified to teach Crossfit for a couple hundred dollars and have no background in lifting etc.

Do your research on the individual gyms/coaches there.

Like any personal trainer really. I over hear / watch some of the trainers at my gym working with their clients and just shake my head. A few others actually seem really good. The dangerous part is when you don't know anything, you'll buy anything the personal trainer is saying...because after all they are the "expert".

He had another one recently that was pretty funny.....

I could see that one hitting home with some people I know. Almost too accurate.

Well, I am interested in functional strength. I need to train for rock climbing this spring. I want to trim down and get strong, but DO NOT want to get all big and bulky as ****. Really, the ultimate goal is to maximize strength while minimizing weight.

Thing is, I fuckin hate the gym. I am wondering if crossfit can meet my needs while making it so if I just show up, they will put me through the paces.

Does it sound like it could work? Is crossfit just a bunch of meathead idiots trying to get big as **** to where they can't bend their elbow anymore?

Ugh. Just read that article and sounds like crossfit is no-no for me.

Sounds like too much strain on tendons and joins. Long term rock climbers are basically guaranteed to have tendon problems and repeated use injuries in their joins. Last fucking thing I need is exercise that makes that worse. Oh well. Dammit.

Crossfit have nothing to do with getting big. It's just the opposite. You end up functionally very strong, but not muscular. One reason is the workout pushes endurance not strength. Second the workout routine changes every day. The workout you do today is totally different than the one tomorow

Omelette is right about functional strength, if you stick with it you'll get very strong. You only get as big as the amount of food you eat, also.

This thread makes crossfit seem like a joke.
A bunch of guys in a warehouse near one of my offices claim they do crossfit, and they are a group that really puts a smear on the crossfit label.

every time I see them I have the weirdest thought- they look like they are trying to accomplish the "feats of strength" portion of Festivus.

I am in a similar situation as you are- I need to maintain strength for wakeboarding, but any extra pound is a no-no.... the knees and lower back take a beating.

Over the years I just cobbled together a workout routine that focused on core strength and leg strength. weight wise, I do 4 sets of 20+ reps for pertinent muscle groups, keeping the weight lower and using slow, controlled lifts.

Food is the most important part... low fat, minimal sugar, keep the calories at about 2000-2200 a day when I work out, and I keep protein to a gram for every pound and a half to 2 pounds of body weight.

If you can get over the douchers that think too highly of themselves in those gyms, then crossfit does work. I did it for 3 years. Never excelled at it but it does get fast results especially if you eat right and cut out drinking. Also is humbling to see some broad clean and jerk something heavier than you.

I'm just too worried about the strain on tendons and joints now. My knees and elbows are kinda of fucked up as it is. And I have to really take care of the tendons in my hands.

Find the right(actually qualified) coach/trainer and you'd be good. But that's not exclusive to crossfit.
