That whole AB I was talking shit to my brother about how Beef will not come through and BAMN! Good job, Welly!
How salty is shark right now? Third great start and no win for him.
He probably should have had someone up before the inning even started...
I'm not aware that very often a club has someone in the bullpen warming up when the closer heads out to the mound with a 2 run lead to start the 9th. Are you meaning you would have expected it based upon how inconsistent Veras has been since the start of the season?Should of had someone up before he threw first pitch

Spent the evening at Busch with the kids, and my sister, Brother in Law and nephew. beautiful evening. Less than full on the first home weekend series of the season for the cards, and against the Cubs no less. Large crowd, but lots of empty seats. Half of "the best fans in baseball" left after the 8th.
I still can't figure out what either manager was thinking.
Renteria had Sweeney stealing third against Yadi. Then in the 9th, with 1st and 3rd, and the score 3-2, they make no play on a runner stealing 2nd, which takes away the DP which would end the game. So the infield goes to normal depth, afraid to play in and allow both runner s to score, so they essentially are conceding the tying run (on the road - with a shit offense and crap bullpen). If the runner getting to 2nd made you immediately concede the tie, why don't you try to prevent him from getting there??
And Strop in the 8th and Veras in the 9th was a predictable mistake. Veras can't save a game with a two run lead. Why not leave Shark in longer?
But Matheny trumped Renteria's questionable moves by a) not bunting with two on and nobody out in the 10th, and b) leaving his closer in to bat with the winning run in scoring position and two out. He has a strong bullpen, yet chose to pitch his guy two innings (which proved fatal) and have him hit when the game was there for the taking.
