According to this guy, Cubs have 7th best Pen-

7. Cubs

Before Jon Lester, before Joe Maddon, before Miguel Montero, the one area of their club that Cubs officials could point to and feel really good about at the end of the 2014 regular season was the bullpen. It made major strides as 2014 evolved, with closer Hector Rondon (9.0) and setup men Pedro Strop (10.5), Neil Ramirez (10.9) and Justin Grimm (9.1) all striking out nine batters per nine or more. Rondon, Strop and Ramirez combined to give up a grand total of six homers in 168 innings, and they all had FIP marks of 2.66 or lower.

Throw in a worthwhile flyer on one-time World Series closer Jason Motte, and you've got a strong outlook for the Cubs as they try to rise up the NL Central standings this season.

They gotta repeat which is tough for an inexperienced group, but with those K numbers I can see it.

I think the bullpen is going to be sick. We have guys behind them in the minors that are very good as well.

There are more and more people that think the Cubs have quietly built a pretty good farm system for pitching as well. The Cubs #1 farm system ranking and all the big bat prospects tend to overshadow this. But here's a few that people are fairly high on. Is it the best group of pitching talent, no, but there are a few pretty good ones.

Jen-Ho-Tseng
CJ Edwards
Duane Underwood
Pierce Johnson
Carson Sands
Jake Stinnett
Dallas Beeler
Jefferson Mejia
Arodys Vizcaino
Paul Blackburn
Rob Zastryzny
Dylan Cease
Justin Steele
Daniel Bard
Corey Black
Anthony Carter
Jorge De Leon
Armando Rivero
Francisley Bueno
Hunter Cervenka

That's a heckuva list you created including pitchers who aren't even in the Cubs organization. Vizcaino was part of the Lastella trade.

I just copied and pasted a list of their minor league pitchers, and as I said, there's a few pretty good prospects on the list. Tseng, Edwards and Johnson are getting pretty good grades. It's not like the Cubs have no pitching prospects. And as I also said, there are some people that think the Cubs minor league pitching is underrated, say what you want.

I don't recall anyone that does "specing" for a living say anything but career minor leaguer for Tseng. This is the make or break from a spec position for Edwards IMO.

Tseng's stuff isn't as projectable because at age 20 he already has a mature body, blah, blah, blah. Edwards? He could be a solid #2. He will get time. Right now who is in the pipeline that we would be discussing are Edwards, Johnson and Rivero. I'm likely missing someone else, but what if Jacob Turner gets a 3rd pitch, etc. Regardless, a serious discussion would involve something other than just listing every MiLB pitcher in the system. A pitcher in A- isn't going to be helping the club win games this year, if someone gets hurt or stumbles.

So you didn't check if the list was accurate?

Tseng is being compared to a HEndricks type pitcher. Not a lot of velocity but great control, and he is under 20 still IIRC. I haven't seen anyone say he is a career minor leaguer, especially at his age.

It's all I have seen.
I've also seen plenty that believe Hendricks is a fluke and not a starter in the bigs as well. But hey, sometimes finesse guys work out.

Even Kieth Law said that the Cubs better prospects were at the bottom level in the minors and most likely a couple years away. This is to be expected as the Cubs obviously concentrated on bats when rebuilding the last few years. The Cubs built the #1 farm system consisting of bats at just about every position deep. They could absolutely use these to get more pitching as well.

They now have a pretty good starting rotation, say what you want about experience...blah, blah, blah. As the OP suggests, they have a pretty good bullpen now as well, with a top backend of the bullpen. They also are showing that they will add more starting pitching moving forward.

All this gives the Cubs the next few years to build the farm system up with quality pitching as well. Keep on downplaying what the Cubs are doing, but they had a gameplan, and they are doing a fantastic job. Time will tell about some of their young pitching prospects, but there are people that think they are there now, with more to come.
