According to the Chicago Tribune, the Cubs are close to finalizing a long-term contract with closer Carlos Marmol.
The Tribune article gives barely any details, saying only that the deal "should be announced" before pitchers and catcher report to spring training in about two weeks. Marmol is eligible for arbitration this winter for the second time in his career and requested a $5.65 million salary when figures were exchanged last month. This extension could be of the two-year variety, buying out his remaining years of arbitration eligibility. Or it could be bigger, and worth major money. Marmol posted a fantastic 2.55 ERA and 38 saves last season for the Cubs while fanning 138 batters in 77 2/3 innings.

Thoughts? I like to hear this but I hope JH does not overpay..

If all we are doing is buying out his arbitration its incredibly stupid, unless he signs for really really cheap.

It's expected to be at least a 3 year contract. Buying out his last 2 years of arb and 1 year of FA.

Deal really close. But he would have to undergo a physical first.

As long as the guy can figure out were the strike zone is and has less WTF are doing moments he did last season. He could really be one of the best closers ever with how nasty his stuff is.

I'll reserve judgment on the deal until I see the salary numbers. But if Marmol can get better control of his nasty stuff, he'll be even less hittable than he is now

We've had this conversation before but I think its too risky to give a pitcher more than three years. Sign him for three and if he stays healthy sign him again later.
