Would be cheap. I'm indifferent as it won't hurt the Cubs too much but it's not a mega-deal either.

I'd be fine with it. Def a value move being he's better than Rodrigo Lopez.

And Rodrigo is not left-handed.

Given the fact that the Cubs really have two starters right now that can legitimately be counted on to fill a rotation spot, I am glad that they are addressing starting pitching in some way. Maholm isn't a stud, but he has put up some solid numbers. And despite declining velocity on his fastball, he actually was able to strike guys out at a near career high rate while also having a near career low walk rate. He is a guy that isn't going to walk a ton and keep the ball in the ballpark. Given the price I think this is a nice safe acquisition that makes this team better which has been the theme of Thed Hoystein's moves so far.

And since you made reference to an all time great film I will leave you with this:

I would actually like the signing. He would be a good 4th to 5th starter and can throw like a 3 sometimes.

Gotta have the token lefty...Maholm will suffice on a cheap deal.

Garza
Demp
Cash
Maholm
Shark/Z?

You don't have to have a token lefty, but I certainly wouldn't be opposed to adding one if he can be effective which Maholm has been in the past. I've been stating for a while that I don't want Cashner to start the season in the big league rotation. I am just concerned that if he pitches well and the team is even moderately competitive the temptation will be too great to push him well beyond 130-140 innings this year.

I'd prefer Cash start tho...if it's in the minors, that's cool...but starting, either way. I'm willing to give Shark a chance @ starting, too.

I want him a starter too, but in AAA so his workload can be monitored closely without it affecting the major league results. If a guy goes down, he is a great sixth starter to pop in the middle of the year.

Agreed.

I forgot about Randy Wells.

He may be trade bait...but he's cheap...idk.

Yeah I would really like it if we only had to count on Wells, Cashner, Zambrano, insert random name here for one spot and not 3.

ay yup...but i think Z will be used as a 4th/5th starter (to give him matchups against lesser pitchers...get his confidence up)..and Wells or Shark will probably be #5...w/ the other going to the pen.

If the Cubs sign Maholm, something like this:

1) Garza
2) Dempster
3) Zambrano
4) Maholm
5) Wells

Closer: Marmol
Set-up: Wood
Set-up: Marshall
Set-up Cashner
LHP: James Russell
RHP: Chris Carpetner
RHP: Jeff Samardziza

The pen looks strong and the rotation, if you think about it, isn't too bad.

Counting on Zambrano at this point is hard to stomach, but if things work well that could be at least a league average rotation which would be a huge improvement over last season.
