Counting on Zambrano at this point is hard to stomach, but if things work well that could be at least a league average rotation which would be a huge improvement over last season.

not losing 2/5 of the rotation due to injuries in the first week would probably go a long way, too...

Z/Shark may both spend time @ Starter/Long reliever this season.

Well, if Z is coming back... Garza, Z, Dempst, Wells, Maholm... sucks that that means no Cashner.

I've been outspoken on the subject, but really do you think Cashner is ready to take a turn every fifth day when he hasn't pitched over a 100 innings in a season professionally yet?

I say just keep Cash in the pen because I think he'll be most effective and will stay healthy.

I think a decision needs to be made on what to do w/ Cash in the next 3 months. Either start him in the minors, put him in the bullpen, or put him in the rotation @ the #4 spot with an absolute innings ceiling. Don't jerk him back and forth. Hate that shit.

The reason you don't do that is because he is one of the few young pitchers the Cubs have that is ready that has the potential to be a top of the rotation starter. And those guys are worth a lot more than a reliever. I am just concerned that he will get rushed into too high of a workload if he is counted on being able to go every fifth day from opening day.

Yeah, true... but I just can't see him not hitting the DL every year as a starter.

If it were up to me, I would put Cashner in the pen in 2012 and have him build up arm strength to prepare for one more opportunity for the rotation in 2013. If he gets him again, leave him in the pen.

I don't know if we really know how far along things are in talks. MLB Trade Rumors was reporting that the Cubs were talking about the parameters of a deal. That could mean that we are likely to get him, but it seems as likely as the Cubs weighing all their options.

I've just heard they are talking and seeing what it'll take. They do like Joe Saunders too, but he'll close more. As of now, the Cubs will sign Maholm soon..

Between Saunders and Maholm, I'd take Paul if I had to choose one. Getting both would be solid though.

This is just a formality. Maholm will be announced as soon as Garza is moved...
