I don't mind LaHair being given an opportunity, but this idea that he has earned a spot based on his performance to date is silly. I would rather go with LaHair than some of the options available for 1B, but he is as likely to provide league average production for 1B as not.

If he's going to be cheap it probably doesn't matter how he produces as long as he can catch throws from his middle infielders

Pena is unlikely to accept arbitration. Like I said, Boras is out looking for a multi year contract.

Do you really want the Cubs to make him an everday first baseman based off of huge numbers repeating AAA for the fifth or sixth time (I lost count) and less than a month of solid at bats at the big league level?

For a year and see how he does(that is if the only option is Pena or him)

We arent going any where this year regardless if the FO doesnt go after Prince or another good 1B man than yes he is fine as a stop gap. Just how Casey Maghee was fine as a stop gap 2 yrs ago for the Brewers.

Tonight is the deadline to accept. We'll find out for sure in about 5.5 hours.

Ill take Lahair for the min rather than Pena for 7m plus next year.

Nope. That's crazy talk.

I'd rather go with Pena or Gabby Sanchez (if available soon) than LaHair.

If the Cubs re-sign Pena, isn't that waving the white flag that they won't compete?

I don't understand why a team like the Cubs would be interested in re-signing Pena.

Because he's a cheaper option, has a reputation for being a good defender (despite his defensive metrics this past season), has good on-base and power numbers, and because he's probably better than Bryan LaHair at the least?

I don't get why he'd be cheaper.

No faith in a minor leaguer, how can one have faith that Pena will become better?

Isn't LaHair making league minimum?

Pena won't become "better" because he's probably about to exit his prime, but if he accepts arbitration he'll make $12MM or so maximum for one year. By cheaper I mean "not as crazy as Pujols or Fielder". LaHair is making league minimum because he sucked for a long time and only recently started destroying AAA pitching.

Pena was pretty solid last year...

Not compared to all-star first basemen but he is far less expensive and was the least of the Cubs problems last year.

Except the part where he only put up the numbers when it didn't matter.

I just don't get why the Cubs would re-sign an aging 1B, while letting Ramirez go.

Especially a guy like Pena, who has been regressing over the past 3-4 seasons.

Ramirez is likely not worth the contract he wants. Pena on a 2 year deal is certainly worth it. Plus, Pena gives us a better chance to win ball games than LaHair does. Because LaHair sucks.

For one Ramirez turned down the option.

If the Cubs lose out on Fielder and cant trade for Gabby, I'd be ok with Pena coming back.
