My favorite teams
Hey, Tom Ricketts said that he can never see Big Z PITCHING for the Cubs again... I think we found our new first baseman...
Someone with knowledge of the waiver claims process...this seems to be if they try to make a trade. If they don't trade and just let the team have him, does this mean they don't have to pay the deferred $5MM? Just trying to make sure.

At this point, Zambo seems like a better hitter than pitcher... lol.
I can't seem to find anything on the subject... but I'm looking.
Thanks. It's too bad none of the baseball peeps nor the Chicago so-called media will look this up.
I answered it in the post above his BTW.
Saw that, thanks! It's still kind of muddled whether the claiming team has to pay it or not, I thought it was cut-and-dry.
Re: the whole "need a 1B next year" thing, he's a free agent, they could just try to bid for him when the claiming team decides not to retain him. So that's a silly reason to pull back the claim. I mean, what are you going to get in return that's more valuable than $6MM-ish of salary relief?
And if the claiming team keeps him?
As Wrigley Firehawks said, the claiming team basically is on the hook if the Cubs don't pull Pena back. The issue is whether the claiming team only pays the non-deferred part or if they have to pay all of it. That's why I'm confused by the situation. I always thought the claiming team assumes the entire remainder of the contract.
