Just saw this on MLBTR
Olney says the Blue Jays actually finished third in the bidding for Yu Darvish behind the Rangers and Cubs. No bid was within $35MM of the $51.7MM Texas submitted.

Damn, so we only bid like 15 Million then, coming in second and Texas overpaid by a fortune.

That really sucks. We were second on both Yu Darvish and Yoenis Cespedes. We wouldn't be in it this year, but we would be a lot closer with those two mid 20s impact players.

Yeah Puig sounds more and more like he was a drastic overspend by the Dodgers to try to make a splash. I am not going to lose sleep over that one. Darvish and Cespedes on the other hand...

Didn't really make sense to pay $50MM and another $50MM on top of that for Darvish when the team was in build mode. I'll live with this.

Yeah if it was a lot closer.. I'd be more upset that it wasn't us..

That's a lot of cash to spend on Yu

I've contended that given the lack of impact pitching in the system that you needed to roll the dice because the opportunity to add front line pitch for just cash is rare, especially at that age. Theo/Jed didn't agree, or they did but paid what they thought was reasonable. It isn't like I am losing sleep over it, but the nagging what ifs do pop up in my head from time to time.

Besides watching the development of Rizzo, Castro and maybe Samardzija what do we have to do besides what ifs for the rest of the year?

Did the Rangers really think that the posting fee would get that high? Or did they just want to pay more than triple the amount any other team submitted to ensure they got Yu?

The answer if you think the Rangers front office is smart, I tend to agree with that position in general by the way, is that they paid what they thought a pitcher with Darvish was worth period. Bidding is blind so they had no idea how other teams would value him. They thought he was worth over a 100 million dollars and so far they look pretty smart for it.

That was probably it. Plus the Cubs and other teams probably made it seem like they wanted to pay through the nose for Yu. This would have the added benefit of tying up some of the Rangers' cash for future expenditures although it seems like Nolan Ryan and friends have no qualms about spending money for a winning product.

Kind of true. But they don't help the already fragile thoughts of Cubs fans.
