You're not paying him to be a superstar. $3MM is about half a win over replacement that you're betting he produces. Reed has shown he can do that over the course of his career. He's not a superstar, but he can play all OF spots and he can hit against LHP. Keep the salary down and it's a solid deal.

Yeah, I read that from the Brewers fan but never linked a source...you got a source for the Byrd rumor?

Fair enough, but most of the value you're getting out of him is just replacement value. In his 3 years with the Cubs: 6.4 runs with the bat, 1.2 with the legs, -3.4 with the glove, 27.6 in replacement, and -1.1 positional. Whether or not you agree with UZR or whatever metric is irrelevant, as you can see that replacement is where all the value is coming from. In his time with the Cubs, he's been worth just over 3 wins, and 2.7 of that is just from playing. I just feel like there is a better option there.
Well yeah, you're just buying a replacement level player. I thought that was what I was saying
I'm pretty sure that LaHair and maybe even Campana(with his legs) can do that for league minimum. I just don't really care for the signing
Today the Cubs brought back a fan favorite to a 1-year deal and that’s outfielder Reed Johnson. Terms were not announce, but believe to be less that 3 million. Which it should be… around 1.5 million would have been a good deal. The deal in still pending a physical, however. The Cubs brought back Reed Johnson last year on a minor league deal. So… he got a better deal that in ’11 after a pretty good season.
Reed Johnson will not be a starter by any measure, but most likely will be the 4th outfielder. Playing in spot starts or coming in for defensive purposes, if Alfonso Soriano is still on the team come 2012. Who the Cubs want to trade and could be working on a trade. IF they will pay majority of his contract.
In 111 games Reed Johnson batted .309 with 5 home runs, 28 rbi’s in 246 at-bats. However, Reed Johnson is more about his defensive and his clubhouse presence.
The Cubs re-signing Johnson does that mean the Cubs will not pursue Yoenis Cespedes, Jorge Soler and top prospect Brett Jackson will not be affected. Tony Campana may be a affected a little and lose playing time. I still see Campana making the team as the 5th OF and the pinch runner.
I’m glad to see Reed Johnson return in Cubbie blue!
I thought that Drew Stubbs was still Cincy's CF?
he is. Cincy fans hate him tho - lol. Dunn's K's w/ out Dunn's production.
