Looks like it will be for a few minor pitching prospects. Cubs will be taking on 40 mil of contract.

Also expect a almost 50/50 split between the 2 catchers. Montero was ranked #1 in framing pitches last year and Castillo needs to work on that as he was one of the worst. Sounds like Hank White pushed this deal.

Over all like it.

I'd expect Montero to get more than 50%. He is better defensively and bats left, so he'd get lion's share.

hammel.....good signing if we get top of rotation starter

Montero for 1-2 minor leaguer.....very good signing as he'd be upgrade defensively and offensively and we need lhb in the lineup, esp one who walks....prob get 66-33 split over Castillo or 75-25 over ross if Castillo moved

lester signing.....hopefully next move to happen and would be a GREAT ONE......really adds to overall pitching depth and slots everyone where they should be (lester-arietta-hammel-Hendricks-wood-turner/strailey/etc)

getting those 3 guys on the roster for 1-2 low level minor leaugers would be a great off-season.....but I think their would be more to come (platoon outfielder and maybe one more reliever)

He's not that old. The FO loves sabermetrics and defense, which describes this move exactly.

Not sure I'd say they love defense. They've given every indication Castro is a long term fixture at SS and he's at best average and more accurately below average. They've given every indication Baez is a future piece and he was arguably worse than Castro at 2B/SS. They drafted Schwarber who is struggling for a position. Bryant's also questionable positionally though not to the same extent as some believe he'd be fine in the OF. In other words, a lot of their future in terms of prospects has questions defensively.

Montero, 31, has three years and $40MM remaining on his current contract. The left-handed backstop struggles against same-handed pitching, including a .198/.252/.311 line in 115 plate appearances last season. He was considerably better against right-handers, with a .256/.348/.386 slash.

He started strong last season. His performance dwindled as the season wore on, leading some (including me) to speculate that he tired. In Chicago, Montero could form a potent platoon with Cubs incumbent Welington Castillo, who hits very well against southpaws – .301/.350/.505 last year. The presence of Castillo could also help to keep Montero fresh.

As a catcher, Montero draws strong grades on his pitch framing. Per StatCorner, he accrued the most framing value of any catcher last season. He caught 29% of base runners in 2014 which is solid but slightly below his career average.

Sounds like a 100% platoon. Both seem to tire as the season goes on. It is a nice lux to have 2 starting quality catchers.

A potential Montero/Castillo could be a very nice upgrade for the Cubs. Montero's defensive metrics improved greatly with the guidance of Henry Blacno (HANK WHITE!!!!!!!!!!!!) and the addition of a left-handed bat will slide in nicely to add some protection. As several have mentioned, you have to ask yourself this -- would you rather be paying Montero $40 million over 3 years... or 5 years and $80+ million to Russell Martin (who's actually a little older than Montero)?

Again, another relatively low-risk, high reward offering.

Woke up to hopefully see this deal being finalized. I'm glad to see Theo standing his ground and telling David Stewart to kick rocks. How was it "almost finalized" at 9 PM last night, but "not close to fruition" this AM?

Probably has to do with the quality of the A-ball prospects we are floating back. Arizona should be happy with a can of spam for a $10M/year platoon catcher who is past his prime. I'm shocked Stewart is gripping tightly.

Seems to me that AZ needs to unload Montero's contract more than the Cubs need a marginal upgrade platoon catcher. Sounds like Theo realizes this.

Not sure I would say 3 years $40 mil is "low risk". I mean Jackson got 4 years $52 and we've seen how that turned out. I'm fine with the deal if some of that money comes down but the way the deal is being reported about I frankly don't understand. Montero is not that good of a catcher that the cubs both have to eat all of his salary and have to give much of anything in return. If he were on the FA market he'd be lucky to get $7-8 mil. He's making roughly $13 mil AAV. In my opinion, this type of deal should have the dbacks eating $5-10 mil regardless of what the cubs give up. If the cubs give up next to nothing(read Turner level trade) that's it. If the cubs give up some Corey Black level players then the dbacks should be eating more like $10-15 mil.

I really don't see how they have much leverage and I'd assume they are pretty dead set on getting rid of him. AFAIK the only other team that's been reported was the Dodgers possibly in a Either contract swap. As such, if the cubs end up eating all his contract I'm frankly going to see it as a loss in terms of who won the trade.

I don't see Miguel as any upgrade for the Cubs or the Sox (he was rumored early in the off seasson to be coming to the Sox) Not for the dollars for sure.

Don't think for a minute that the Cubs didn't do their homework on this. The left-right combo is quite interesting considering what they would have paid for Martin who is right handed. He is a far superior hitter to Baker, and I am quite sure that Henry Blanco put his two cents in on this since he worked with him, and will continue to do so.

I will take an upgrade no matter the size, any day of the week.

Is he with the stick? His d has gotten worse as well. I'm not so sure. But the splits if they hold would be impressive.
