Not sure I'd say they love defense. They've given every indication Castro is a long term fixture at SS and he's at best average and more accurately below average. They've given every indication Baez is a future piece and he was arguably worse than Castro at 2B/SS. They drafted Schwarber who is struggling for a position. Bryant's also questionable positionally though not to the same extent as some believe he'd be fine in the OF. In other words, a lot of their future in terms of prospects has questions defensively.

Quick: Where did Castro rank among MLB SS's defensively last year?

Is he with the stick? His d has gotten worse as well. I'm not so sure. But the splits if they hold would be impressive.

I am not the biggest proponent of pitch framing (probably because I don't think it SHOULD matter, but everyone agrees it DOES matter), but Montero was top of the league last year, and very high in 2011 and 2012. I didn't look back any farther than that.

I do not know how he is at holding / throwing out runners. Is he not good?

Just for comparison sake, the Cubs are taking Montero, and paying slightly more for three years than Liriano got.

And gave up prospects, though not expected to be much.

Just sayin'.

Not that I don't trust Theo. he is most likely still looking at better pitching options than Liriano, but I think the guy is a good deal at 3/39.

I want to say like three years ago he was at like 40% and has fallen off a cliff to like 27%. I know pitchers are part of it but based on age I want to say he can't catch anymore.

Well then, I guess we better pull out of the running for a certain lefty who did not throw to first one single time last year.

Don't think I like this move. Montero's hitting has been declining the last few years and Castillo is probably hitting his peak batting season this year or next. The money is way to high and if the Cubs give up any player who could be a decent major leaguer, the deal seems like garbage.

I hope the Cubs are not overreaching because they feel they need to make moves.

He still hits righties well and is a solid framer. What you have to ask yourself is if he is an upgrade from Baker.

Jefferson Mejia and Zach Godley.

Not happy that we're taking on all that salary and giving up Mejia who is a high risk, high upside guy.

Looks like we're gonna be trying to trade Castillo now... not a fan of that either.

Who says they're trading Castillo? He's in his prime, not making much money, wouldn't get anything of value in return, and helps mitigate Montero's weakness against LHP. There's no upside there.

I really don't get this trade. Mejia was in most people's top 20 cubs prospects and they are eating all the money? Not a fan of the trade.

The Cubs have lower level pitching depth but no blue chip. Outside of Edwards any arm in the system is expendable and easily replaced the next draft.

Who knows why they made the trade. Maybe shark and Hammel talked to Lester in Oak and they both said that they lost close pitches due to Castillo's poor framing and then Lester brought it up to Theo. guess what then this makes sense.

@CarrieMuskat: Theo says Montero is "perfect fit" and complement to Castillo. They're also not shopping Welly. #Cubs

Relax people. We have no idea what the Cubs are going to do in any of this. Montero has not taken one swing as a Cub. Castillo may stay, he may go in trade to get a needed void filled.

Lester may come, he may not. Point is, we are jumping the gun at every single move or no moves. There is still a lot of decisions to be made before opening day.

The Cubs have saved money for this kind of spending, and so far, we have landed a really good manager, a left handed AS catcher, and a good middle of the order pitcher. Land a TOR pitcher, and it's safe to say that this has been a rather good offseason compared to the past three. I will take this any day over what they have been doing. :elephant:
