LOL, they added a better player than they have on the bench and now they are going to sink to 4th in the division because of it now?

No they are going to sink because they are getting paddled lately and the Reds added a TOR.

OT: I am still laughing at the final plays in their pre-trade teams' uniforms by Puig and Bauer.
MLB Network was just showing the replays again.

"can play" is one thing.

"play them well" is another.

How many poor hitters without plus speed do we need? It's the opposite of adding a specialist with one real tool, like a guy who would pinch run late in games.

We have a whole toy chest full of 2B/OF without a single plus tool, except for Almora's D. None are really good defensively at 2B. None are fast. None have power you can count on. None get on base a lot.
Tony Kemp isnt slow. Also, he strikes out significantly less than bote. His bat is a touch under league average and he strikes out at a low rate. He is a contact hitter and his bat has been superior compared to Almora. He is what everyone has been complaining we needed with contact. Im not sure whats the deal. We traded our 3rd catcher that we acquired what 3 weeks ago? Maldanado has no stick. He is useless on the bench unless he is catching.

LOL, they are one game back. Reds are 6 1/2 games behind them. Trevor Bauer isnt going to propel the Reds.

Not sure I agree here. I mean look it's clear they are operating with a tight budget. We can argue whether or not they should be til the cows come home but it's painfully obvious they have very little room to add salary. They've effectively swapped out Monty for Holland on a league min deal and added kemp in the process. For all you can say about Kemp having a down year thus far he's been a 94 wRC+. Cubs CF as a whole this year has hit .234/.322/.394 for a 91 wRC+ and as I said with the comment about Kemp's BABIP, I think there's a lot of room for improvement.

Don't get me wrong, if your point is they shouldn't stop adding then I agree. But to me this series of moves thus far is similar to the Chavez trade last year in that it's sneaky good. Monty was kind of selling low but you were in a position where you kind of had to and swapping him for Holland isn't really much of a down grade IMO. And in Kemp you get a guy who can be a left handed bat not just for 2019 but he's not even arb eligible until 2021. So I seem him more replacing La Stella's role long term and being more useful defensively. And as mentioned I like that he's going to put balls in play as the cubs have too many guys who strike out too much.

Obviously the moves aren't home runs but i mean they've parted with what Hatch and Monty thus far and picked up some mildly interesting players in return.

Ok as I said if their answer is moving Happ to full time 2B and that platoon in CF then they missed the question completely.

Now if it a pre-curser deal with trading Happ etc out for a clear upgrade to the lead off I'm game.

I am not at all down on the trade.
I am just not pretending it's a huge deal.

Jesus did some great stuff to.

Well if you buy into that stuff.

But realistically the Reds have 2 starters that they can flip today. They are not done and they have better assets.

Mets and Reds are both doing things right.

Oh, its not a huge deal. But, if he can put the ball in play in the right situations. We really need that.

OK...hold your breath, as we need to wait for details.

I see "Brewers and Giants in agreement on significant trade".

Seems the Brewers gave up their 3rd best prospect for Pomeranz. Wow

Athletics To Acquire Tanner Roark
July 31st, 2019 at 1:45pm CST • By Jeff Todd
The Athletics have struck a deal to acquire righty Tanner Roark from the Reds, according to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic (Twitter link). Outfielder Jameson Hannah is headed to Cincinnati in return, per Jon Heyman of MLB Network (Twitter link).

Roark is earning $10MM this year before hitting free agency at season’s end. He was a clear trade candidate for a Cincinnati organization that is largely looking ahead to the 2020 campaign. The club’s recent acquisition of Trevor Bauer, combined with the recent return of Alex Wood, left a bit of a rotation overload even with Tyler Mahlehitting the injured list.

The Athletics have scrambled all season long to keep their own rotation afloat. Anticipated arrivals of a variety of injured, younger hurlers just haven’t happened yet. With the club competing hard for a Wild Card slot — if not a late dash for the division — there was a clear need for more starters, even after the prior acquisition of Homer Bailey (who has struggled in Oakland).

Roark, who’s closing in on his 33rd birthday, has taken a step back after a strong opening to the season. He’s now sitting on a 4.24 ERA through 110 1/3 innings on the year, with 8.8 K/9, 3.1 BB/9, 1.14 HR/9, and 36.7% groundball rate in 110 1/3 innings. Roark, a 25th round pick by the Rangers in 2008, joined the Nationals in 2010 as part of the Cristian Guzman trade. He greatly exceeded expectations with the Nationals, logging 935 innings of 3.59 ball across six seasons. 2016 was a particular high point, as Roark finished 10th in the NL Cy Young voting. The Reds picked him up in a December trade.

Soon to turn 22, Hannah was a second-round pick in the 2018 draft. He has been playing at the High-A level, where he carries a .284/.341/.381 batting line in 414 plate appearances. It seems his power will need to come around a bit, but he’s regarded as possessing a quality hit tool with an advanced approach.

Kemp can play CF. He's got a -1.2 UZR/150 in 300 or so innings. It's an unusual move as it's basically a 3 team trade but I like kemp. He is more of a high contact guy who's still under control for a long while. He had a 110 wRC+ in roughly 300 PAs last year. He's having a down year thus far but that's almost entirely his unsustainable .233 BABIP.

Ultimately he's the type of hitter I feel the offense needs more of.
They just needed to feel they got something back for Monty. Maldonado did not sign here because he would not have gotten enough playing time. Sure do not know why Theo thought he would be happy here.
