If Fields was never the plan, they would have taken a QB last year. I think Poles really liked Fields and they would have moved on with the original number 1 pick they had.
Last year was not a big enough leap for Fields, and Williams was too good to pass up.
Last year was not a big enough leap for Fields because there was no leap.
Poles never committed to building the roster with Fields in the plans. It was the right move. When Fields showed some signs in 2022 he made a desperation move to get Claypool, and then added DJ and Wright in the offseason. He again did not fully commit to Fields but gave him another year because of the options he had at the time. There was hope JF could improve in the necessary ways, by us fans, and by the team. If Caleb was in the 2022 draft, Justin would've been gone then too, though.
There's still a reluctance for people to accept the reality of JF's play this last season. Nobody in the league was willing to give anything up to give him a chance to start. The Bears would've drafted another QB if they were picking at #2 this year, likely at least at #3 as well. This wasn't simply that Caleb was too good to pass up, it was also Fields wasn't good enough to stick with if you had another viable option.
Fields is not going to be a long term starter in the league, obviously that's my opinion, but I will be shocked if he is. And yet we had people yelling about how the Bears should trade out of #1, pass up on a top 5 prospect of the last decade+, and build around a guy who isn't even viewed as a starter by the NFL. While there's still denial of this, in a few years we will be able to look back at it and see how absurd it all was. Because it was completely absurd.
