Agreed it is all speculation, but I just think that there is more to discussing this move than Dan Haren being slightly less shitty than Carlos Marmol.

Agreed. My stance was that the Cubs have openly stated monetary problems all along. Seems like any couple of million saved means a lot these days, especially when looking at the bullpen.

And?
The Cubs knew what they were doing when they were set on acquiring Haren. The team is gonna be worse in a month or so after they sell at the deadline again anyways. So I don't really see the point in belaboring that.

And they knew what they were doing when they kept Marmol. I think the real point is that the Cubs were in a no win situation at this point with him, and that is largely the point I was raising.

I suppose, if the Cubs would have been willing to throw that extra couple million to Grilli that would have been a real nice move. However overspending on relievers usually backfires on a team.

They were/are in a no-win situation with Marmol anyways.

To be honest, Haren's issues seem to be stemming from his injuries not being completely healed, much like with Roy Halladay's struggles from last year that've crept into this season and ended up resulting in surgery. I still think it wouldn't have been a terrible trade because at the time it would've filled a roster hole for both parties involved. At the time, the Cubs still needed starters and the Angels needed bullpen help. Ironically enough, the Cubs' bullpen has been a disaster, and Marmol's ineptitude has only been the tip of the iceberg.

He is awful in 9th inning, but has been effective in the 6th & 7th innings.

i cant believe some are pissed that the cubs didnt trade marmol for haren.. i know marmol suck, but so does haren..

he leads the majors giving up 19 HRs and 56 ERs , he has a 6.15 ERA in 15 Games and 82 IP

seriously, were complaining about not making this trade ????

Some of the complaints are where the Cubs could have used excess money to aid in other areas. They have openly stated that they have spent every penny.

Also, it was noted that if things didn't work out in the rotation, and since Haren is tied to only one year, there could have been a fall out plan to go to the bullpen. Marmol has no fall out plans.

I am pretty sure that the Cubs have stats on what innings Marmol has pitched the best if they truly wanted to showcase his talents. I would think with todays technology, the very least management could do is google Marmols stats as some around here have the capacity to do.

So now that Marmol has been DFA'd, does this change anyone's opinion about Haren's potential value vs Marmol's?

Rather than trading a turd for a turd, the Cubs flushed first.
