Bears are in the process of finalizing a contract with former Redskin fullback Darell Young... No link. A little birdie told me...

Bears haven't had a fullback since Tyler Clutts. Loved that guy. He was a DL at Fresno. Henry Melton was a FB at Texas, then a DL for the Bears.

I remember watching Melton return kicks in preseason.

Clearly this is because of Cutler. Get used to run run run punt

Other variations...

run, run, screen pass, punt

run, run, sack/strip fumble

run, run, INT

Did we even use a fullback last year? Seems like a waste of a roster spot when he could just use a TE as an h-back.

Our TEs can barely keep the end tight, much less back the full

Good point. I thought perhaps our future TE in Khari Lee, he of 1 catch for 7 yards in his inaugural season, might find a non-pass catching niche.

I still don't understand the trade for Khari Lee. He's bad.

Always thought letting Clutts go was a mistake. Miss watching him hit 5 different guys on a play.

A "one man wrecking crew." ........ supposably Paul Lasike is like that?! We were also using Mitch Unrein for a short yardage thumper......

Doubt if he makes the team but 6'3'' 310 lb. former DLineman turned TE Greg Scruggs might be fun to watch in the pre-season if they put him at HB a few plays.

http://beardownblog.sportsblog.com/...invite-fullback-darrel-young-to-minicamp.html

The Bears are bringing in former Redskins' fullback Darrel Young to their minicamp on a tryout basis.

Young played all six seasons of his career with the Redskins. For his career he has 51 carries for 185 yards and seven touchdowns. His rushing stats might be underrated, but he plays fullback so he doesn't get many rushing opportunities.

In 2014 Young started 10 games, which was the most of his career. That season the Redskins running back Alfred Morris ran for 1,074 yards and eight touchdowns. He finished 11th in the NFL for yards rushed.

Usually players invited to minicamp don't have much of a chance of making the roster. But Young is a seasoned veteran and plays a position that the Bears could need help at.

Currently Khari Lee is penciled in as the starter at fullback. Lee got some run at fullback last season but he doesn't have the experience that Young has.

If Young proves he can still play at a high level, then there is a chance he can make the team as a starting fullback.

That is yet to be seen as Young is going on age 30 and hasn't started more than 10 games in a season. The Bears could feel more confident just working on Lee at fullback and building him up at the position.

Overall, the Bears are bringing in Young in an underrated move. Young could have a chance to make the team and if the team were to sign him it just adds another level of competition for the Chicago Bears.

Chicago Bears May Add Another Interesting Piece to Offense

Ryan Pace has established a reputation as Chicago Bears GM for digging up players from small places. Players who have shown positive ability in the past and perhaps if put in a good system under the right coaches could become highly productive. It happened for Tracy Porter. It happened for Deonte Thompson. Now another name has surfaced that should draw some attention. The Bears offense hasn’t had a legitimate fullback on the roster since 2012 when Tyler Clutts played his last of two seasons with the team. Given the desire to run the football like head coach John Fox wants, it would make sense that they would at least look into adding one if possible. As it turns out Pace and his staff plucked one out of the heap. If one were to look at the stats alone, Darrel Young isn’t all that impressive. However, the former Washington Redskins fullback has some good things going for him. He’s still just 29-years old and quite versatile, scoring a total of 13 touchdowns (seven on the ground and six through the air). His ability to catch the ball out of the backfield is a definite weapon Bears could use. Of course though, like most fullbacks he has to be able to lead block for the running backs and his history with the Redskins speaks for itself. He led the way for three-time Pro Bowler Alfred Morris from 2012 to 2014, a span that included the Redskins having the first and fifth ranked rushing attacks in back-to-back years. Anytime the offense has stayed committed to the ground (i.e. ranking in the top 15 in rush attempts) he has proven a valuable commodity. Given he’s just trying out at this point, money is not going to be an issue if the Chicago Bears end up wanting to sign Young. For them it’s a matter of determining his condition and health. He did miss five games with injury in 2015. Assuming all goes well they may give him a shot fill an empty position on their roster, easing the pressure on their tight ends.

9. Darrel Young, Washington Redskins

As a blocker, Darrel Young is able to control the point of attack, showing the power and balance to lock on and move defenders. He's patient and poised and has the toughness to knock off linebackers or defensive ends in pass protection.

Power18/20

Young's 5'11", 251-pound frame packs a punch. He has the upper- and lower-body strength to win early as a blocker, and while he's rarely used as a ball-carrier, Young doesn't go down on first contact. While working as a protector in the passing game, he didn't surrender a single sack or hurry all season but did allow one quarterback hit.

Speed16/20

You won't confuse Young for a halfback with his size and speed, but he's able to get out in space and push the run game forward. And in the pass game, when he is used as a receiver, Young has the speed to get open out of the backfield.

Hands14/20

On six targets, Young caught six passes for 22 yards. He's limited as a receiving option on more than checkdowns.

Position Value5/5
Overall73/95
