CHICAGO -- Chicago Cubs second baseman Darwin Barney said Tuesday that he will go on the disabled list with a Grade 1 PCL strain in his right knee.
Barney injured the knee scoring the only run of Monday night's game, sliding home head first to avoid a tag. He said that the knee could be better in five-seven days, but it's best for he and the team that he goes on the DL.
"As soon as I slid into home plate last night, I knew something was really wrong," he said. "The whole knee went numb. I had an MRI today and it revealed that Grade 1 strain in my knee."
Barney's is the latest injury in a season full of them for the Cubs. In addition to Barney, Andrew Cashner, Randy Wells, Alfonso Soriano, Marlon Byrd, Jeff Baker, Reed Johnson, Kerry Wood and Geovany Soto have spent time on the DL this season.
Barney, a candidate for NL Rookie of the Year, was hitting .294 with one home run and 25 RBIs for the Cubs.
