CHICAGO -- Chicago Cubs second baseman Darwin Barney said Tuesday that he will go on the disabled list with a Grade 1 PCL strain in his right knee.

Barney injured the knee scoring the only run of Monday night's game, sliding home head first to avoid a tag. He said that the knee could be better in five-seven days, but it's best for he and the team that he goes on the DL.

"As soon as I slid into home plate last night, I knew something was really wrong," he said. "The whole knee went numb. I had an MRI today and it revealed that Grade 1 strain in my knee."

Barney's is the latest injury in a season full of them for the Cubs. In addition to Barney, Andrew Cashner, Randy Wells, Alfonso Soriano, Marlon Byrd, Jeff Baker, Reed Johnson, Kerry Wood and Geovany Soto have spent time on the DL this season.

Barney, a candidate for NL Rookie of the Year, was hitting .294 with one home run and 25 RBIs for the Cubs.

Doesn't sound too serious, looking forward to his return in the next week.

Probably won't need a roster move since Soriano is due back soon.

Damn it.

CO's celebrating right now.

If Castro gets injured too I won't be watching at all.

What else could go wrong?

I really hope Quade gives DJ a chance. I really think DJ could be the starting 2B next year.

We all know it will be Dewitt though.

I'd be all for using DJ at 2B, except he doesn't have as much range. I just don't want him rotting on the bench.

Backup infielder.

I think DJ has a much higher ceiling than Barney. Barney is just Theriot without the discipline. At least DJ has some pop this year.

I know you like Barney but he just isnt anything special. I think he could be a decent SS though, but as 2B are concerned he just doesn't have the bat.

Yeah. He is finally starting to add some power and they bring him up here and he sits the bench.

Should have just brought up Scales if thats all you wanted out of him. He is 22 lets have him just sit the bench.

They definitely should've just promoted Bobby Scales. It's either a GM fail for not making the manager play him as much as possible, or a manager fail, but it's still a fail.

Might not be anything too special but he's been far from bad. His bat has been pretty good, not the power, but getting hits in general.

The following has no weight in this, but I thought I'd mention anyway as it is curious: Castro looks up to Darwin Barney, as they said during a game.

He had a great April, but since May 1st his line is 277/304/308. That's bad no matter how you look at it.

And I am not saying get rid of him, I mean he has a great glove, and has shown to do pretty well in the clutch so I think he could be a good backup middle infielder and a decent PH.

I just don't think he is good enough to be an every day 2B, he is really a SS, and his bat could be more palatable there, but unfortunately for him we have a young SS with a lot of potential playing in front of him.

What has Castro done in the same stretch? Seems they were both struggling but beginning to snap out of it at about the same time, but then Barney got injured.

And ya, he is pretty clutch... I can't find his RISP stat anywhere though, is it still around .400?

Castro's been pretty bad since April as well, decent in May though...
Starlin Castro Game By Game Stats and Performance - Chicago Cubs - ESPN

So I we all give up on Barney because he hasn't been great for a month-and-a-half, we are kind of being hypocritical by still valuing Castro highly.

Of course, those are slightly different circumstances, and there is no way we should ever give up on Castro, but I'm just throwing that out there.

Its 317/323/367 so definitely not as good as it was, but better than in non RISP situations.

And yes Castro has been struggling (281/304/394) since May 1st, but he is A) the shortstop and B) much younger.

The thing with Barney is he never performed in the minors. That's really the sticking point for me at least.

I would just like to take these 15 days and see what DJ has, and go from there. If he is hitting well he should replace Barney at least for a bit. If not Barney should get it back.

I don't understand what Barney has done to lose his job right now. I'm all for change at Spring Training next year, but Barney has not only played well, he also has one of the best gloves on the team.
