I think Phillips fired the first shot on Twitter. I don't think Barney's comments were out of line, just dab being dab :D

Phillips is definitely the better overall player, but Barney is the better defender and that's what the Gold Gloves are supposed to measure, not that they always do it right. I mean, Mike Trout didn't get one, so... :shifty:

I agree that they were simple straight forward comments. I just couldn't help but think that the line about extra flair or flourish was a subtle dig at Phillips. Maybe it was. Maybe it wasn't, but just thought I would mention it and see if other people had the same thought.

Should've been Phillips.

FWIW:

Fielding Bible Awards

SECOND BASE—DARWIN BARNEY, CHICAGO CUBS (96 POINTS)

Darwin Barney led all second basemen in Defensive Runs Saved with 28. Closest to him were Robinson Cano and Alexi Casilla with 15. Barney secured 96 points, only 4 points short of a unanimous win. The 2011 Fielding Bible Award winner, Dustin Pedroia, was runner up in 2012 with 82 points.

Which does back up the scouting reports I've read on Barney. I think Darwin passes both the eye and the stat test, albeit stats that at this point are in their primitive or post primitive stages (underdeveloped).

Barney does benefit from overshifts, but I still think he's the best defender at second in the league. Sure, Brandon Phillips is the better overall player but Barney is the better defender.

Barney deserved the gold glove, Phillips is the better player to have on your team. Not sure what all the hostility is about. Congrats to the purple dinosaur.

No, but if a bunch of people who are smart and think about this kind of thing think that Barney is the best defender at 2B in the NL, well...

Well you replied, and then we you get a reply back to your off-base post, you resort to using stupid images.

Same thing you do with HawkWriter, then you call him an idiot and call him a worthless poster, where he is at least making real points and at the very least trying. Same can't be said for you often.

Haha! ok jntg. dont cry.

and no, your lover never makes a point....ever.

Like I said before, all you do is try to be someone your not. you try to talk intelligent hockey when you just started following.....I can do the same with soccer...and i dont watch a damn game....real easy to use google and look up numbers.

Again stop trying to be like CO.

Barney on the field was the best defender this year. I agree with that. Going into future seasons I wouldnt say he is a shoe in as the best defender at his position.

Defense is kind of fickle that way. You only get a few chances at each position each game and that plays into the inherent randomness of the game. Some years you look spectacular and other years you look like garbage. I think Barney can stay an elite defender for a while but he won't always pass the eye test or the stats test.

we need better stat tests thats for sure.

I watched oh about 75% of all cubs games and realized his defense was damn good. Now I didnt watch enough of the other candidates but the streak alone should be good enough for a gold glove as that is impressive. you go a few years being even considered for a gold glove than for sure that would be his specialty.

I still disagree with the way the awards are done even though they got this one right (finally) I mean those years of jeter beating ramirez was just flat out wrong.

I have to disagree with the Adam Jones thing as well...I usually dont side with speigal but he is dead on...it should have been trout.

We really need some kind of formula that isnt so flawed to help some of us fans out a bit.

We need Fieldf/x :shifty:

Ohhh mercy how I want that data.

Statistically Invisible range (pre positioning defensively, moving with the pitch, etc etc) is something I've been wanting to study for a long long time.

If you read Bleacher Nation's bullets, Barney had nothing but compliments for Phillips. Also, anyone else find it funny that Phillips tweeted that his own season wasn't good enough for several reasons including no Gold Glove the day before they were announced? I'm beginning to wonder if players find out early.

I agree, partly b/c it's solely based on pitching performance. I loved when Felix won a cpl years ago, despite other ppl having better records.

The discussion got really good after the Capt. Serious are you high comment. Wish I hadn't been working to take an active part, but to sum it up. Until fieldf/x is available all the data available is flawed. Defense is the area I look to numbers the least, but this seems like a case of eyes and stats matching up. Surprised that Barney beat out the name player in Phillips, but it was kind of nice to see them get it right. Last night there were plenty of cases when that clearly didn't happen.
