I hope we don't trade Barney. But it seems like the Cubs would trade anything for young prospects...

I see no reason to trade Barney. Personally, I don't even really consider him an everyday kind of guy. He puts up mediocre-average enough numbers, plays good defense. He's dirt cheap. He's not going to bring back anything of value alone. So, why even think of trading him? If he's packaged to bring in something of merit, then so be it.

I happen to think that if Torreyes keeps up his torrid June pace... or if DeVoss gets going again... Barney's future is on the bench.

I think he could be a starting SS for someone. His glove is the reason he is on the field. If he can get the avg/obp up just a tick with the increased power he could actually be a useful starter.

If his glove is that good he can have a Brendan Ryan type of career.

The question I have, not having seen a ton of SS play from him, is does his plus range and arm transfer to SS or are they merely average.

He came up through the minors as SS and it was suggested that he was a plus defender there, so I think he still has it. Probably needs a week of steady play to get reacclimated to the other side of the infield though.

Yeah he was always regarded as a plus defender. I guess those fears are unfounded that his arm strength might not be good enough.

If he has good instincts and good range then that does make up a bit for the arm strength.

Yeah I guess I am just worried that his defense wouldn't be as good moving to SS as he is at 2B. If he isn't special on defense, then his value goes way down.
