My family is going to visit Chicago in August. My wife and I will be staying in Sandwich but my daughter and her husband want to stay downtown in the loop.

They are a young couple with a newborn but want to stay somewhere fairly hip with restaurants, nightlife but still close to everything. Since it has been 20 years since I have been to Chicago can you guys help us out with some suggestions? They want to be able to walk to things like Navy Pier, the museums and all the hip places young people go which I would assume includes Rush street.

They are also looking for suggestions for things to do while we are here. Arriving on a Monday and departing on a Friday.

Thanks guys

Tell them to go to Ghirardelli for ice cream. It's right by water tower place, open til midnight. I go there after tennis every weekend, sooo good!

For you, there is nothing to do, because...Sandwich...

For them, just pick a hotel at random. Any one of them in the loop or near North Side is within walking distance of most of the major museums (since they all flank Grant Park). The bars and nightlife shit is all over the place, but heavily concentrated just north of the river from the loop; of course that depends on what exactly they're looking for. There's a bunch of blues bars considerably further north (a pair almost literally across the street from one another on Halsted) that would require a cab or hopping on the L. I mean, you have to be a little more specific than "nightlife" and "restaurants," because that could be any number of extremely disparate things with very different locations.

What do they plan on doing with a newborn during "nightlife" excursions?

I always suggest the double-tap of highbrow culture: spend the day wandering the AIC, followed by dinner, then catching the CSO. That can all be done with only having to cross a single street after arriving at the Art Institute. But that's just me.

A few weeks ago, after the taste of Randolph, we went to a place called Headquarters Beercade. The place was filled with 2 floors of old school arcade games you could play, really fun.

With the exception of TJ I suggest you all take a very long fucking walk on Navy Pier.

Worthless bunch of turds. But thanks anyway.

On Wednesday nights at 9pm at Navy Pier, they put together a beautiful fireworks show.

If you let the ice cream melt and then drink it, would it fall under the new "sugary drink" tax?
