Defense has played way beyond their talent level all season. Considering the offense is 22nd in yards per game and 25th in the league scoring 20 points a game it is pretty impressive the Bears have won any games at all this season.
The Bears Defense is 9th in yards given up per game and while they are 27th in points per game the numbers look worse as a result of the offense and special teams. The defense gave up 13 of the 19 points scored by the Chargers, 16 of the 23 points scored by the Vikings, 10 of the 17 points scored by the Chiefs, 20 of the 26 points scored by the Seahawks and 34 of the 48 points scored by the Cardinals.
The defense has also had the unenviable position of defending short fields. They had held the Packers to 17 points through three quarters and kept the game within a score until an offensive turnover led to a 4 play, 48 yard TD drive putting the game out of reach. The Cardinals game as mentioned had 14 points allowed by the special teams and offense and the special teams also left the Bears D defending a 48 yard TD drive late in the game. The special teams forced the Bears to defend a 4 play 6 yard FG attempt against Seattle in addition to the return TD allowed. The special teams also left the Bears defending a 3 play, 25 yard TD drive against the Raiders. The offense gave up an interception that led to a second half FG as well.
Fangio has his unit working despite a lack of playmakers.
