He's a leading candidate for NBA Rookie of the Year. Everyone from LeBron James to Chris Paul has praised his play. Everyone from Doc Rivers to Phil Jackson has lauded his demeanor.

So, Derrick Rose, how would you grade your rookie season?

"I'd probably go with a B or B-minus," Rose says—without a smile. "We haven't won enough and I've committed too many turnovers."

Almost one full season in, has it been easy or hard playing in your hometown?

"I've looked at it as a blessing. I feel like God just put everything together for me. It was just perfect. Being at home, seeing my family members all the time, it really makes it easy. I mean, I can see my mom almost every day. I don't have to worry about being homesick."

Has there been any time this entire season you have felt overwhelmed?

"No. About the only thing different is when I do go out to eat places, I have a hat on so people don't recognize me as much. I know if we make the playoffs, the [media] attention will be even crazier. But that's something I can life with."

What keeps you grounded?

"Just staying focused, knowing it always can change. I never get too big-headed or get into thinking I'm bigger than anybody. I'm only 20 and I have a lot to learn. I know I can get better. Anybody can get better if you work hard and stay focused. You learn by watching tape and other players. I'm just trying to do the best I can."

Do you need to get better defensively?

"Do I! That's the area I'm going to work hardest at this off-season. I'm going to watch a bunch of film and just try to get better."

As someone who rarely lost in high school and college, how have you adjusted to losing, if at all?

"I still hate losing. It makes me so mad. It helps a little that you might play the next day or you have so many games. In high school, you can lose one game and that can be your whole season. What I still hate is if you lose and then you have a day off because all I do is think about it all day. It takes too long waiting [for the next game]. Only when there's a back-to-back is it kind of OK."

What's the biggest thing you have learned this season?

"That you have to work hard all the time. I always did. But it's another level here. There's that saying that hard work beats talent. So I take that into account because there are a lot of hard-working people out there and people can catch you. I caught a couple of people in my [college] class that [critics] said were better than me. I just kept on working. And it paid off."

Have you ever had a private moment where you have said to yourself, "I can play at this level. This transition has been easy."

"No, no, no. I'm not even near a star yet. But hopefully one day I could become one."

The best part was his comments on his defense and how he's going to work on it over the Summer. Brought a smile to my face.

Best answer.

This is what I was hoping he would say and WOULD DO in the offseason.

If he does work hard and gets better at both ends of the floor. Then he will be a sure superstar and I mean SUPER SUPERSTAR.

Gotta love this kid.

Great read, even if the Bulls somehow missed the playoffs, I think a good Rose interview talking about him improving and working hard would make everything better lol.

I can't think of anything Rose has ever said that you could possibly be upset about. He seems to have the perfect attitude.

I agree.

He's not a great interview if you talk to him, but he seems like a good humble guy, and when he says the right things you believe him rather than thinking he's just saying it because it's the right thing to say.

I'd agree with those above that say his answer about defense is encouraging if we're to believe it. Of course, most guys know their weaknesses, and whether they can ever improve them is the question.

If you asked Eddy Curry whether he needed to improve his defense and rebounding, I'm sure he'd have said yes. However, this gets back to my previous point, when Derrick says something you tend to believe it whereas with some other guys you're a little more skeptical.

This kid is gold. He has the perfect attitude and you get the feeling that you are always going to get his best effort. I just hope when he does become a superstar (and it will happen) that he walks, talks and acts like it.

Doug, the only difference in Eddy and other players we had is that when asked about his defense (or bad defense), he didn't say like "yeah, I need to improve my defense..." but he said, "Do I!..." That tells me that he knows how bad he is and they says he will work on that this summer by watching lot of films and figure out he can play better defense.

IMO, this is exactly what he needs. The whole summer to concentrate (among other things) on the defense - best way is to WATCH TON OF GAME FILMS - not only himself but other players who are top defenders and see how they move their feet, how they fight for position, how they play physical etc etc.

The more he watches the films and implements it on the court, that much better he will be.

I don't know if he will ever be a great defender but I just want him to be average first.

I really want to edit that article and add 'uhm' to every word.

What can you really say about Derrick at this point, though? He's honest. Down to earth. Freakishly gifted and he has an excellent attitude.

You hope when a guy says uhmm that he's being honest. If he answers too fast he's pulling into the cliche cabinet ;)

I agree Derrick has the Jordan, Lebron attitude and just seems to be talking candidly and humbly. Unlike say a Kobe or A-Rod who just seem like a rehearsed line and fake. Derrick could be a great defender, he has all of the physical capabilities and watching film will help. But he has to realize its an attitude he has to gain. Watch how Kirk gets up and pressure's a ball handler up at half court while Derrick hardly ever gets up in their face until they are close to the paint. I think that if he wants to win as badly as he seems to, that passion for defense will come because he will realize that's what it will take to win.

I wish I could say I was surprised. If he thinks his approval ratings are low now....

Many on here could care less but talk to the business owners or established

professionals that make a decent living as well as though who are frugal with

their saving and investments. It is ridiculous when certain politicians lie to us

when they say they are not raising taxes. Ask them why they are allowing all

of the Bush tax cuts to expire? Yes folks, for those of you who disliked Bush

you are going to find that Obama and the Democrats are going to do more harm

to you fiscally then Bush ever did. And if you are fortunate enough to inherit

assets from your family wait until you have to pay up to 55% estate tax on

them.

Maybe when people realize financially what this Congress and White House

are doing to the middle class they will wake up.

**** both sides sir. Bush's tax cuts didn't make anyone rich. I think the estate tax or death tax or whatever is just a bunch a crap. It is just shitty period.

No politician should get paid more then the average wage in the nation. They shouldn't gets perks. Don't even get me started on lobbyists. They are also a reason this nation is failing.

My problem with that, Jako, is that at least Bush (for whatever else people want to say about him) understood small business. And it isn't as much as a Democrat vs. Republican issue. Christ, Clinton even understood how important small business is to the economy.

As a small business owner, I haven't seen one thing that Obama has done to help us. If I've missed it, somebody let me know. The guy has never been responsible for producing a profit in his career and with 10% unemployment has done nothing to promote hiring in small business other than blame it on Bush (OK, there is the HIRE act, you get to deduct the employers 6% FICA tax if you hire a previously unemployed person. It lasts until 12/31. BFD.)

I just don't get someone who looks at corporate profits as immoral.

I hear ya, and you make sense there. I keep forgetting I am a small business owner as well. I am just very jaded with the both sides, and I am tired with the shit they throw at us.

Corporate profits aren't a bad thing at all.
