Derrick Rose still won't recruit

Derrick Rose's game might evolve a bit in his first season back from knee surgery, but the Bulls star's stance against recruiting free agents to Chicago hasn't.

"I don't recruit. If anyone wants to play with me, I don't mind playing with, it could be anyone in the NBA, but as far as recruiting, I never did and never will," Rose told rappler.com, a social news network, in a video this week.

Rose passed on recruiting free-agent stars LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, Chris Bosh and others in the summer of 2010. However, he apparently made one exception to his rule last offseason, when he said he helped bring in Kirk Hinrich.

"Kirk is someone I could see playing alongside a long time," Rose said last October. "When you're a hooper and you know someone on the court is going into a battle with you, and he's not giving up if he knows you are going to keep battling and I'm someone that will keep fighting to the end, and he's the same as you, so why not have him on the team? Kirk is the first person I recruited."

Here's the thing about this. I have no problem with Rose not wanting to recruit and wanting to do it with the guys he has now. But, I don't want to hear Reggie bitching about how management hasn't brought in the talent to beat the Heat. It's not Rose's job to recruit the talent, but that doesn't mean he can't help. And remember Reggie, your brother took the MAX money. So don't complain about the Bulls not bringing in the talent. Durant didn't take the max. Westbrook didn't take the max.

It looks good to the fans to have a player 'recruit' FAs. They're going where the money is not to travel with their friends. The reality is agents are the ones who can steer their clients to teams with their other clients. Every agent knows what his players can expect to get and which teams have the cap room to take them. An agent can look at a roster and know he could get an $8 million contract for one of his players so he steers the $3 million player somewhere else so the first team has the cap room for the bigger deal.

They all see that the Bulls aren't going to go way into the luxury tax so there's no point to looking there until the Bulls get far enough under to afford who they represent.

On other sites, even people who like to hate on Rose for winning the MVP(silly reason to hate a person), commend him for not being a recruiter. And I agree.

I would like it if he made a few calls to get on the same page with potential signings, which I think doesn't include what kind of recruiting he is talking about.

Yes 100% agree. This is the mental midget perspective on team building. The Bulls don't need him bitching, that doesn't help.

Derrick seems like he's more to himself and his own circle of family and friends not being a phony trying to make friends with players just to convince them to come to Chicago. I'm trying to remember Jordan begging players to come to Chicago or was that Jerry Krause's job?

Michael Jordan was the best player on the Bulls then, Derrick Rose is the best player on the Bulls now. Stop with the Jordan must not be compared to anyone foolishness because I'm sure no one will try to claim Derrick Rose is anywhere near the player MJ was.


With that said you can take MJ's name out and replace it with Toni Kukoc for all I care, the point is a player's job is do whatever it takes to win a championship ON the court, not change his lifestyle to chase after free agents which is the job of the GM.

Stop trying to add blame to Rose for the lack of talent on the team because he isn't doing the job of GarPax. I don't think Derrick is some jerk that players don't want to play with. He's a good teamate, he's unselfish with the ball, and he can make the other players around him better. If anything be worried that players are worried about playing for such a hard-nosed coach like Thibs or they don't want to play for a team that has stupid rules about headbands and runs it self like its a mom and pop organization.

I love Thibs so I wouldn't replace him, I was pointing out the concerns players would have based on his reputation. I'm not sure it was only Skiles who had that rule but you may be right about that.

I do think there is debate as to whether Rose needs to recruit based on the comments Ive seen, I obviously think he does not need to "recruit" and believe the whole idea that its a players fault the team lacks talent is laughable. The idea that Rose doesn't want attention taken away from him was myth created during the Lebron farce as an excuse for why he didn't come here, the truth of course was that Lebron, Wade, and Bosh knew all along that they were gonna play for the Heat and were just building up the hype.

Yes the Bulls need another playmaker (or two) and that is the job of Gar Foreman with an assist from Paxson. Just what the hell is the GM supposed to do other than hire a coach. Paxson shouldn't even have a job based on his non D-Rose draft transactions, and Gar has been better but still lacks the creativity to make big moves. The fact the Bulls didn't resign Nate Robinson after the season he gave them is disgusting. Just because Reggie Rose shouldn't have taken his comments public doesn't mean he was wrong about everything he said.
