Gervon Dexter was an Eberflus pick, a Deforest Buckner type pass rushing 3-Tech. As a 6'6" 310lbs former basketball player that only did 22 reps on the combine bench press, he lacks the strength to anchor and get stops against the run.
The Bears were #28 against the run in the NFL allowing 4.8 yards per carry. Every team they faced "got off the bus running". As we all know, losing Billings to a torn pectoral muscle only magnified the problem.
So, what solutions should the Bears look for to fix the interior D-Line?
Should Dexter be moved to DE and hope he can develop into a Trey Hendrickson type?
Should the Bears find a big 330lb NT to play next to Dexter to help him play the run?
How would you fix the run defense heading into the off season??
Bears should draft a top NT, no doubt... in the 1st Rd if one is there.
Billings is excellent at everything DT, but they should reduce his snap count.
Like
@HearshotKDS and
@dennehy were saying, the way Dexter is going, you'd want him playing in passing situations. I wouldn't take all his run downs away, yet, as he's still learning technique and he is freaky strong.
So, your 1st Rd NT/DT and Billings are monster runstoppers and you bring in Dexter, and maybe Walker inside for passing downs.
Unfortunately, Pickens just looks like a miss at run and passrush. Depending on the final roster, he benched 22... even tho he graded a little better at pass, maybe beef him up to take some 1st-2nd down snaps and backup.
Cowart (60) and Chris Williams (61) had a better run grade than Pickens (57), & Cowart the best p-rush (60).
DE:
Darrell Taylor (70) and Jacob Martin (67) had a better p-rush grade than Booker (59) and I think Booker will improve. Obviously, Bears need another top DE, whether thru FA or draft.
