There are 5 official options that could have happened during this hiatus.

1) Chicago Cardinals Move Away. Chicago Bears Stay
2) Chicago Bears Move Away. Chicago Cardinals Stay
3) Both the Bears and the Cardinals Leave Chicago
4) Both the Bears and the Cardinals Stay
5) Bears and Cardinals Merge into 1 team and form a dynasty.

Lets further discuss our options:

1) Chicago Cardinals Move Away. Chicago Bears Stay
If any of us follow history, this is the option the world gave us. With the Cardinals providing ten losing seasons until 1960, they could not keep enough fans to stay in Chicago. They were simply overmastered by the mighty bears. Was this the right thing to do though? History says yes, common knowledge says no. Chicago has a rich history in sports and could easily support two NFL teams. See Cubs and White Sox fourms. Not to mention this is football, the most popular sport in the US and A since the early 90's.

2) Chicago Bears Move Away. Chicago Cardinals Stay
I would be extremly upset if history played out like this. We all know a bear is a much greater and fierce animal than a cardinal. In fact, the cardinal has 4 professional sport already named as its mascot. The bears ARE original. We would have had to miss out on payton, dent, and mays and instead see running game of dickerson.

3) Both the Bears and the Cardinals Leave Chicago
This is a very unlikely senerio. Chicago was booming in manufacturing in the 1950s. Too many people to NOT support a football team. I do not see this senerio as realistic and I will not even acknowledge it.

4) Both the Bears and the Cardinals Stay
I'm humbled and upset history did not play us this card. No other US NFL City has attempted to put two NFL teams in a city, and Chicago would have been the place to do it. The cardinals could have continued playing at Wriggly Field, while the Bears play with solider. The rivalry that would exist in this city would be nuts.

5) Bears and Cardinals Merge into 1 team and form a dynasty.
I have never seen this happen before, but this is defiantly the way more teams should go. For example, there is no team in LA. What if both the "Titans" and the "Jaguars" would combine and head out to LA. It would be nuts and a team full of allstars. Bears and Cardinals should have tried to think this one through. We could have had both Dickerson and Payton.

Quite certain I would have been a Cardinals fan if both teams were still around.

I do wonder if it would have been a south side/north side thing like the Sox/Cubs.

I was raised on the south side...so it was just instilled in me that the Sox were my team. The Cards were gone years before I was born...so I never had that option. It was Bears or Packers when I grew up and I would have been thrown out of my house if I pulled for the Pack.

If the NFL seriously wanted to make another large expansion to the league...I would be all for an AFC Chicago team. Maybe they would get the nice stadium with a retractable roof.

Cubs grow into Bears was a common phrase among my grandfather and his lodge buddies. Shortly after, '**** Halas.'

Chicago can support two teams. I'm sure the Bears wouldn't be very wild about it. I remember my Dad and uncles arguing about the Cards and Bears. The Cardinals had a following here.

I thought "Cubs grow into Bears" was the reasoning Halas gave for renaming the Staleys.

It was my grandmother that was the rabid football nut when I grew up. She never dropped an "f" bomb, but watching those games on TV was the only time I ever heard her curse.

IMO, a second football team would be doomed in Chicago. We've obviously seen this work for baseball, but the Bears just have a stranglehold and too many loyal fans. Chicago is also a football city first and foremost, so I don't think you can point to baseball and say it can work based on that.

It's probably a better guess than LA. We were talking about the Chicago Cardinals who have moved around. Like I said, the Bears wouldn't like it, but there's enough market. Most of us would follow both, but we'll never get the name back.

I think you would be suprised
An expansion team is a funny story for a second city. No city has ever tried it so late, Chicago Would be the first.

People will instantly feel sympothy for the new team. Chicago in general will not look at them as a threat to the bears. Fans will be fans of both teams. It wont be until your kids until people start disliking the oposing. Or if 1 team stink while the other is the 2012 broncos.

If the Chicago Cardinals moved back you would have to do something to make them "different" Make it like wriggly. No parking. walk or train to the game. Right in the middle of Lincoln Park.
Lets be honest, that would be awesome, and I would be fans of both until they met in the superbowl. And then let your kids decide which way they want to grow

You must not be a friend of the parks. They could probably build a stadium along the lake if they went south or north. I doubt any team would want to mess with all the haggling in Chicago. It's not going to happen anytime soon, but it's always fun to remember the Cards.

Aren't the Cardinals the oldest team in the NFL? I think so.
