Difference between soup and a bisque?

Not reading all this but I always thought Bisque was soup with cream in it.. to make it fancy.

You are correct about the cream, but it only makes it creamy not fancy.

Calling it a bisque is the fancy part because it's French and using French words for mundane things are a great trick restaurants learned to make things sound fancier than they really are.

Bisque roughly translates to "thick soup", but nobody is odering thick soup off a menu...which is also a French word.

To do this at home, it's no longer grilled cheese with tomato soup. It's a cheddar panini with a tomato bisque.
