Anyone have DishNet through Dish Network?

I'm considering getting it, but don't know anyone who has satellite internet. Wondered about pros and cons if anyone has it. Thx in advance.

My dad used to have it...then he got in a big fight with them about something, but I don't remember what it was. I think it was customer service related though. I'll ask him next time I talk to him. Can you not get broadband cable where you're at? That's the only reason I would consider a satellite solution.

I've got hughesnet which started out as directway. I live in the country and that was about my only choice. Sucks when it's bad weather. The only way to deal with CS is to be a complete dick.

We do have broadband cable w/ internet...and we're not unhappy w/ it...but like the current perk package (free hopper, free hd, free ipad mini) dish is offering...as well as, of course, the "cheap year".

Yeah, the biggest fear I have is if it's really windy/stormy, do I lose my tv and internet? b/c that'd suck :(

Not the wind. It's the dense clouds and snow. Make sure you can reach the dish to remove the snow from it.

If you get a dish for anything. You have to maintain the dish itself. That is just the reality of the physics involved. You need to clean it, and coat the dish every year or so, otherwise service will go out in bad weather.

When Directv had an exclusive deal for sunday ticket, I got their service. I had issues until I read up on dish maintenance, and after fixing my dish, never had outages. But you need to clean and coat the dish, no way around that.

Yes it is slow but better than anything else I can get. Data cap makes me crazy but I've only used it all once. Watching a Redskins game to see Rex play a couple of years ago. He beat the Giants. Sorry OT.

I used liquid teflon, but there are better coatings available. Fluorothane is supposed to be the best.

I tried PAM at first, and that worked, but it wears out quick(like a week). I wont recommend it, or silicone/wd40 sprays. Those can make it worse.

Just to give you an idea...

You can fit 4.6gb of data on a standard single-layer DVD. 20 GB is not something you want, if you watch streaming videos(youtube, netflix, etc), or listen to internet radio. 10mbps is good if the price is under $20 a month, but without that cap.

Yeah, the cap thing is what is giving me pause. We use wi-fi for our phones as often as possible, both use our computers daily, and currently enjoy 8 mbps dl speed w/ no cap, but it's tied into our cable.

And getting into bits and bytes... Just websearch on the differences, so you know what your ISP is advertising. They almost always use bits to make things seem bigger than they are.

Just like a pixel is the smallest part of data displayed, a bit is the smallest usable data in a value. There are 8 bits in a byte. The only thing smaller is a binary digit which is basically half of a bit and completely unusable alone.

Dish internet is almost obsolete IMO. Until better satellite's are launched into orbit to handle more subscribers, you're stuck using the services controlled by birds launched technological ages ago. Right now, it's very expensive to get the permits to launch into space, and very expensive to build on top of that. I wouldn't hold my breath.

How much is the price for this service? Might be a decent backup ISP.

And for reference, when Comcast had a data cap, it was 250GB per month but have dropped it for the time being.

On my own sometimes I get over the 250GB line with all the stuff I download or stream, so I would be really concerned about a 20GB cap.

My Aunt out in Arizona had HughesNet and the upload speed was shit and just FYI they were throttling torrents, if that matters to you.

Satellite internet seems to be very much limited by the available satellite infrastructure.... if I had access to normal broadband I would stick with it.
