Does anyone else like Villanueva?

I know it's only a handful of starts, but the movement on his pitched seems to be pretty stout. He has made some pretty good hitting teams look clueless. Could this guy be that diamond in the rough that the Cubs have badly needed for years?
Again, I know it's early............Just sayin'.

ya I like him. He has solid command of his pitches and has an idea what he is doing out there.

Yeah he has looked great but once again it has only been a couple starts.

However I wouldn't call him a diamond in the rough. I mean he was a fairly solid pitcher in Milwaukee and Toronto for a few years before coming to Chicago. Not like say Ian Stewart which was a shot in the dark.

It's been three starts and he's never pitched over 125.1 innings in his major league career.

Let's see how he is doing come July.

I have a strangely Jason Marquis-like feeling towards him right now.

Gotta ask this. If he pitches well and keeps his HR total to respectability throughout the first few months, is he a pitcher you would keep or would you flip him since pitching is at a premium these days and the Cubs have him for 2 years, 10 million?

Having a low 4 somthing ERA in the AL East the past 2 years is intriguing. Like I said, if he doesn't start having those movement pitches come sailing over the plate and he can keep them on the corners and the ball in the park, the Cubs might have something here.

I know, I know, time will tell.

The Cubs are so overdue for a player to actually become something. Usually that player ends up being a Cardinal.

I used to laugh at the Jason Marquis quotes and how bad of a pitcher he was. At the time he was a Cub, I could care less because he went like 10 consecutive years of whatever team he was on, that team went to the playoffs.

Hell, make a batboy on the Cubs if that's what it takes.

Booo! Good to see you, apologies for the maturity issues, but I couldnt do this :fap: on cbs.

Based on this years regime and most likely outcome, hes gonna get flipped. I dont want to, because his change up has put its big boy pants on and his location is impeccable. I can guess Texas, Anaheim, Reds, Cards, White Sox, Royals, and a few other teams will need pitching and look at this guy and Garza most likely if hes back and solid. But the main reason I dont want to trade him is because of that beard.......:eek:hmy:

When the cubs do deal, the only prospect on my wish list is Cody Buckel from the Rangers......

What's shakin' Pat? Good to hear from some good guys for a change.

Love the beard you say? You must have fallen allover yourself when Matt Clement pitched. LOL

As far as dealing a player, I'd rather not always deal players. Sometimes you have to hold onto some of the guys IF they do perform.

I understand about restocking the farm, but I also understand about turning the line-up over year after year which equates to very little which is what's going on now.

Trade him?? I don't get it. While we're busy "rebuilding" we want to trade quality pitchers with modest contracts WHO WE JUST SIGNED (Maholm, Villanueva) for prospects WHO MAY NOT EVEN PAN OUT?? I don't get it.

I am still taking a wait and see approach with him.

Most of his career has been as a reliever. Most of his success has been as a reliever.

It is a lot easier being a reliever when most of the times opponents will get one AB a series against you rather then three or four in a single game.

In his career he has a 4.58 ERA as a starter and 3.76 as a reliever.

Also as a reliever he is striking out about a batter an inning but as a starter only about 6.5 per 9 innings.

Hopefully he keeps pitching well cause if he doesn't, things could get REAL ugly again this year.

As of now he is awesome. Dude probably has an ERA of 1. But, he is a Cub and this can all come crumbling down and that wouldn't surprise me much. Look at Carlos Silva.

the baseball guys on mlbnetwork were describing him like a greg maddux type pitcher.. someone who dont have alot of pop on his fastball but has been able to get guys out with mixing the pitches up and location. i would hope being just 29, if he continues to have good games that they would hold onto him going into next year as a 4th starter but i think having just a 2 yr deal for 10 mil, he will end up like maholm and get dealt at the deadline for prospects.

He's playing well and earning his paycheck to this point.

Nice to see a few signings actually know how to play ML baseball.

Schierholtz has been awesome so far too.

Glad we gave up on Shittibridge already, that dude was awful with the bat.

Agreed on Scheitholez to this point. Not hard to impress the fans with a team full of mostly bench players.

Some turds will eventually rise to the top.

I hope he can keep it up all season. Beef Castle too. That dude his a hitting machine right now.

My worries right now is Rizzo. That dude isn't doing much but a 2 run HR here and there and nothing in between.
