No reason to rush anything with Leatherwoord at this point. They will have him under contract all next offseason to see if he finds a more permanent spot at guard or if he just ends up a back-up.

The Eagles game just shows what we already knew, at a minimum, they need to sign a new starting RT and C. The other interesting one to me for next year will be if Carter with a full offseason fits anywhere at guard in his 2nd year? Does he improve enough to at least be active and depth?

They did in practice. They liked him better at guard. It worked. He’s been great there.

Don’t get this obsession people have with making him a tackle.
They told him he’s 3rd string if he wants to stay at tackle, which he did for about a week.

I can’t possibly imagine what they see in Leatherwood that makes them think he can play tackle in the NFL.

I'm pretty sure Leatherwood gave up 2 sacks, 2 additional QB hits and 5 pressures in a 6 dropback span in the 2nd quarter. I know Haasan Reddick has been really good this year and is tough matchup for anyone, but frankly I don't need to see any more of Alex Leatherwood. And I was all about giving him a chance the last 4 weeks.
Reddick completely humiliated him and looked like DPOY yesterday.

Bad day for Poles. Brisker and Gordon flashed but Velus, Ebner, and Leatherwood’s Bears careers should be over. They will only play because they need warm bodies.

Ideally Bears want to give him as many snaps as possible to see what they have, but also dont want to get Fields killed in the evaluation process. Concerning that after dropping 25 pounds from Mono he still doesnt have the footspeed to keep up with speed rush on the edge - maybe Tevens injury gives him a chance to rotate snaps at RG.
I thought he just didn't move far enough laterally on those two bad snaps. He seemed to initially be in position, but as Reddick kept going further upfield Leatherwood appeared to stop moving laterally, as though he thought he was deep enough to wall off Haason.

To me, he's too talented (physically) to give up on already. I believe he needs to be coached up on his spacial/situational awareness. Come on, Y'all. The dude is athletic and still young. Unless he's a nightmare to work with or coach, he's got traits to build on and not abandon, certainly not if we're talking about him as a possible depth piece, at the very least. As evidenced yesterday, we not only need better starters, depth is a necessity, as well.

I mean, Schofield is awful. He's the one guy I'd jettison before giving up on Leatherwood!

I respectfully disagree. He has the traits, just needs better coaching, IMO.

It was a reclamation project that got de-railed by him picking up mono. Combine that with his genuinely underwhelming start with the Raiders, you have to wonder if his career is that of a backup and no more.

Cheap back up that learns the system and is at best average. That's how depth is built.

Redick makes a lot of tackles look foolish, but holy shit that was the worst block attempt I've seen since Mustipher blocking thin air.

How has Reddick just casually bounces around the league producing three double digit sack seasons in a row????

I think a lot depends on whether Fields is playing QB or the peter man is playing. If the peter man is playing, then fine, play Leatherwood as much as possible and see if there's anything salvageable. If Fields is in the game, I'd prefer they have their best available offensive linemen playing to try to limit how many hits he takes. It likely won't make much of a difference either way but that would be my preference. Yesterday was just horrible all around on the oline, they got collectively whooped repeatedly.

Eh. The 2 2nd round picks were good. The 6th round pick and lottery ticket pick up after roster cuts mean nothing. Nobody is going to fault Poles for Ebner and Leatherwood not working out. They gave up no assets to get them and both only got reps because of injuries.

He missed the block bad because he made the mistake of trying to help out Schofeld by putting his left on Schofiled, this in turn casued him to lose the edge. Bad decision, but he was trying to help out his RG and that can be fixed.

The other thing that makes me wonder with Leatherwood is if he would be better at LG than anything on the right side? He was the LT at Alabama for 2 years. I just wonder if his footwork is generally suited better for the left side where it may be more natural for him? So far in the NFL, the Raiders and Bears have only tried him on the right side as near as I can tell.

Lol. No one gives a shit about a 6th round pick and a waiver claim failing. Velus was definitely a miss but please keep overdramatizing your opinion that the sky is falling.
