Low A-Midwest League
(2-1 T-1st Western)Peoria Chiefs 6 at (1-2 T-5th Western)Beloit Snappers (MIN) 2
The Chiefs take their opening series with a convincing 6-2 win. Zeke DeVoss got the game started with a double. He would get cut down on a run down but the Chiefs would take 1 run lead. Chiefs starter Jose Rosario would give that run back in the bottom of the inning off a Ed Rosario solo shot, but the Chiefs would answer with three runs in the second. DeVoss would get his first RBI by a HBP with the bases loaded. LF Eduardo Gonzalez went 2 for 4 with a solo shot for the only Chiefs homerun. 2B Zeke DeVoss ended the game going 1 for 3 with a BB and RBI, and OF Reggie Golden would go 1 for 5 with a strikeout. SP Jose Rosario got the win going 5.1 IP giving up 2 ER with 3 BB and 2 K. He had a ton of groundball outs on the day.
High A-Florida State League
(1-2 T-4th North)Daytona Cubs 0 at (2-1 T-2nd North)Brevard County Manatees (MIL) 1
This might be the most encouraging 1-0 loss I have ever seen. The reason I write that is that former 1st round pick Hayden Simpson was the losing pitcher. Simpson gave up a solo shot for the game's only run. The Cubs offense was pretty stagnant. CF Matt Szczur and 2B Ronald Torreyes were a combined 0 for 7 with 3 strikeouts. LF John Androelli got on base three times which accounted for 3 of the 8 baserunners the Cubs had all game. The other negatives is that apparently Simpson was only clocked at 86 mph on his fastball which means he still has yet to recover the velocity he lost following what has to be the most severe case of mono ever recorded.
AA-Southern League
(2-1 2nd North)Tennessee Smokies 2 at (1-2 4th North)Chattanooga Lookouts (LAD) 10
The Smokies can't make it three in a row on the road. The Smokies matched the Lookouts pitching for 7 innings led by starter Dallas Beeler. Beeler pitched 5 innings gave up a single run on 5 hits with no walks 2 strikeouts. 2B Logan Watkins had a good game with a 2 for 5 day. 1B Justin Bour went 1 for 3 with an RBI. CF Jae-Hoon Ha chipped in 2 hits in 4 ABs. The downfall of the Smokies was a 9 run sixth inning given up by relievers Daniel Berlind and Casey Weathers. Berlind got 2 outs but gave up 7 hits and a walk for 8 ER. Weathers allowed the inherited runners and one of his own to score before mercifully ending the inning. RF Johnathan Mota isn't getting a mention due to the bat which was 0 for 4, but rather due to a scoreless inning of relief he pitched in the eighth. Mota got two fly outs and a pop out in his fourth professional pitching appearance, for those curious he has thrown 5.2 innings giving up 1 ER with 3 BB and 2 K.
AAA-Pacific Coast League
(2-1 T-2nd American South)Round Rock Express (TEX) 7 at (1-2 T-2nd American North)Iowa Cubs 2
Chris Rusin made his 2012 debut against Round Rock. Rusin took the loss giving up 4 runs over 5.1 IP, but his performance was a lot stronger than his stat line. 1B Michael Bianucci continued to haunt the I-Cubs with his 3rd straight game with a HR to give the Express the early lead. The I-Cubs would tie the game, but a 3 run sixth would give the Express the margin needed for victory. The Express would rough up Nate Robertson in his I-Cub debut to make the game a laugher. CF Brett Jackson went 2 for 4 with 2 runs scored for the I-Cubs. 1B Anthony Rizzo would go 1 for 4 and pick up an RBI in the loss.
Scouting Reports (Iowa Cubs):
SP Chris Rusin-Rusin started the game off impressively with a 6 pitch first inning. He has a real smooth and easy looking delivery. He had good command most of the night giving up only 2 walks, and Rusin was not getting the benefit of many close calls throughout the night. Rusin was impressive fielding his position and flashed in excellent pickoff move which he used twice to eliminate speedy baserunners Julio Bourbon and Leonys Martin. Rusin gave up three solid hits all night, but the Express were able to bunch them together to do damage. The sixth inning Julio Bourbon got a weak infield hit off of Rusin's foot. Martin ripped a double past a diving Rizzo, and Bianucci got a soft single up the middle. Rusin's night was finished at that point.
RP Frankie De La Cruz-His delivery looks a lot like Marcos Mateo. He had a fastball working in the low 90s and has a good chaneup in the middle 80s with downward movement that he picked up from Fernando Rodney. De La Cruz fell behind hitters early consistently, and it cost him in the sixth where gave up a long double that hit the warning track to drive in two runs charged to Rusin. In the eighth inning, despite falling behind hitters, he managed to get a quick 1-2-3 inning with relatively weak contact made by all three hitters. He was able to get swinging strikes with the changeup.
RP Nate Robertson-Fastball was clocked at 87 mph. Robertson had some bad luck to start the inning by hitting the shoetops of the first batter he faced and an error on a possible double play ball resulting in two on and no outs. Robertson gave up three solid hits for 3 runs to score in the eighth inning.
LF Tony Campana-Managed only a soft single to center for his one time on base in his last at bat. He struck out an inside fastball. Round Rock pitchers have been pounding left handers inside consistently throughout the series.
CF Brett Jackson-Jackson flew out in his at bat. He made contact on the 2-2 pitch after missing on a 91 mph inside fastball. His second plate appearance he fouled off two pitches and eventually drew a walk on a full count pitch. His second at bat he hit a solid single past the pitcher up the middle on a 1-2 pitch. His third at bat he hit a solid double at the base of the right field wall. Jackson would fan swinging on his last at bat. He went up 2-0 to start the at bat, but had two outside strikes called. He swung and missed on another outside pitch to end the at bat.
1B Anthony Rizzo-The Express tried to work fastballs inside and low to Rizzo throughout the night. He popped up the first one. It should be noted that he was hustling the entire time out of the box and he was at 2B when the 3B caught the routine pop out. He pulled an inside fastball between the 1B holding the runner and the 2B for his RBI, but popped out and struck out on inside pitches in his final two at bats.
3B Adrian Cardenas-Played 3B for the first time this year. Cardenas made a routine play at 3B, but also had a low throw that Anthony Rizzo couldn't hang onto for an error.
