Guy's

I am moving to a pretty remote area for retirement and the only option for internet besides HughsNet is DSL with a max 6 meg speed. Since I will be VPN in 8 hours a day to provide support I don't think it is a good idea purchasing a metered service just for faster speeds. Given that I need to purchase a DSL modem. Which is the best out there I already have a wireless router so I don't need wireless capability but if it is built in to the best modem I would consider it as well.

I know there are enough geeks on this board so come on and help an old, forgetful dude out here.

A company named Caltell. There are less than 2000 people living in this area. No Cox, no Comcast, No Dish, No Direct. I am just looking for the best DSL modem out there. Figured the geek squad from CCS could point me in the right direction

I could point you in the direction of DSL, but we aren't talking about the same thing.

You're going to be capped one way or another anyways. Don't worry about the "best" modem or modem router combo, just look at what other users on the Caltell support forums are using and go from there. Even many 15 year old DSL modems will get to your cap, so it's not going to really matter, and that will be money better spent elsewhere or down the line when they upgrade services.

6 Mbps max.... I might cut my wrists.

But back to the point.... usually your DSL provider will give you a modem/router to use as part of the service, whether you rent it or buy it from them.

If they do that I would just use the one they give you.... like Crys said, no modem is going to do much for you if their cap for you is 6Mbps... you could find a modem from 20 years ago that could do 6Mbps lol.

Unfortunately my new house is not equipped with the fiber that Obama provided so my max speed is going to be 6 meg. Still fast enough to stream. And 6 meg is going to cost me a 100 a month because I have to get their telephone as well as the internet. Late this year Exede is launching a new satellite which will provide service to my area and by that time my temp gig will be over. So I guess a trip to Wally World is in order.

Obama's stimulus package provided Calaveras County with 45 million to add fiber optic backbone. Now the local internet company and phone company is in the process of trying to get fiber to everyones home. Mine is a few years away from getting it.

You trying to ruin his e-life... don't listen to him TBD... HughsNet is fucking awful

And Urblock is supposed to be my friend. :turrible::obama:

Yeah Hughesnet is metered and if you go over your allotted data they make it where you can't do anything for the rest of the month. I am not sure how much bandwidth VPN requires but I wouldn't be able to do my job with metered service. I am constantly uploading and downloading software and various files.

6 meg is still fast enough for porn :smug2:

The photo in that pic is not of the work out there.
It is a pic of the sign in front of my moms house.
