Here's a theory:

Maybe it was the dude's girlfriend.

She grabs the receipt, writes a love note, tells him "I took care of the tip, dear."

Very true.   So given cost of living in that area and that RL tends to have the 10%-12% tippers, she is probably losing about 40% of her norm.</p>
