Dwight Howard by himself makes the Knicks a top 5 NBA defense.
Dwight Howard is worth a lot more than a guy without a good knee and an overpaid Tyson Chandler.
Amare's contract isn't insured so I highly doubt the Magic would take the risk.
They can get a lot better offers than this

The Magic have said that if they trade Howard, they want to get back veteran players in order to keep the team competitive. It's one reason why they were pushing hard for the Lakers as a trade partner because of having their choice of Bynum, Odom and Gasol, plus a pick and cash. Since Howard limited the teams he'd accept a trade to, the Magic are hamstrung. It doesn't seem like the Nets have a shot with their previous offers.
I still say Mark Cuban somehow lands Howard and Deron Williams before the start of next season and pairs them up with Dirk.

If this were to happen, I think it would make the Knicks better. Melo and Amar'e don't seem to play well together. If the Knicks had Melo at SF and Dwight at C, the PF position wouldn't really matter as much especially since Melo can play in the post too.
Now the Knicks would still need a PG who can run the team, like Rondo does in Boston, or they would still struggle like they're struggling now.

This will make both teams better for this year.But NYK benefits are huge.Winning a championship is not a matter of one year.Pairing Melo with Howard will be huge thing.One defensive monster with one offensive monster.They are gonna be contenders for the next 5 years at least.Every team that have one great offensive player should try doing this trade.Bulls included.It would be huge if you pair DRose with DH12.Maybe fail for this season because we will lose our depth and chemistry but next years will be hot.Imagine a player like DH12 coached by the best defensive coach in the NBA.That will be sick.

A rather grandiose assessment of not only Howard's abilities but that of the other Knick players. People were saying similar crap about Chandler & it's simply not true. If that were true then Orlando would be an incredible defensive team. They aren't. They are currently ranked 12th. Howard would make their interior D infinitely better, but you still have to defend the perimeter, something the Knicks rarely do.
This would be a stupid trade for both sides. The Knicks would lose an allstar PF & top 5 interior defender & simply just replace both with Howard, which is good but doesn't get them closer to a championship. And Orlando would have around $150mill in 2 players with long injury histories.
