I have a ROWPU in my house. The filters are pricy but the water is good.

Do you live in LA county? As a Californian, you know that everywhere you turn, someone is telling you to conserve water. My mother even put in an artificial lawn in her backyard, and let her avocado and lemon trees die in an effort to conserve. Everyone has done such a great job at conserving water, that guess what the water district decided to do? Raise rates!!! We've cut our water usage so much that now their revenues are too low, so now they're making everyone pay. Congrats, you did such a good job at conserving water, now we're gonna raise the rates on you. LOL!

No....I am in Northern Ca but they are doing the same thing here. We keep a bucket in the shower to catch the water and use it to water what few plants we have left. Not sure if they have raised our rates yet though. Good question to ask the wife. Got the ole brick in the toilets as well.

Do-able? Of course. Not just groundwater recharge or recycled water but RO Desal.

What you run into is the cost of it. That when you have problems. No one wants to pay for it. Even if you somehow got everything public sector to take a paycut to fund that you'd still need to raise taxes to pay for it--even if the engineering was quick and solid for designing it and the distribution networks and the constructing was smooth and under-budget.

Although recycled water is kinda a hard sell to squeamish american taste buds. Yes, we have the technology to produce treatment/recycle facilities that can make raw sewage completely safe and potable. Getting your average person to buy off on going Bear Grylls as a nation (even though we're all drinking recycled dinosaur piss right now), that's hard to do.

Sure there is a cost. A lot of cost. But there is so much money wasted on other stuff that it is ridiculous. What this state(Cal) doesn't do is plan for stuff that actually solves problems. Take the so-called "bullet train" which our jerky jerry governor wants as his legacy. That is never going to happen yet they've already spent billions on something that isn't even needed.....Certainly not as much as having state wide water availability for people, businesses, and especially agriculture. California could be so rich in agriculture that it could feed the entire world and not make a dent in its potential. But instead we let fresh water go uncaptured and run-off into the oceans. Why? And you are right about desalination. All we need is economy of scale to do it properly. We have technology right now that can make this happen. We have people and industry to make this happen. What we do not have are government folks who can make this happen with cooperation with businesses, banks, and the workforce.

It's not just politicians, it's the people as well...after all, where do the politicians come from? Who votes for them?

The sad thing is water is part of infrastructure, and it's one thing that people don't like to pay for and don't like to think about until a catastrophe strikes. Even cutting the fat is not the issue in terms of paying for it--it's just something people don't like to pay for in terms of maintenance, upkeep, and keeping the system working. It's the same mindset in how people completely neglect their cars because they can't be arsed to pay for whatever maintenance, and then later down the line a huge bill blindsides them that could have been avoided if they did something smart--like change their oil.

Case in point. for the 1st time in nearly 3 decades the community I live in upped the sewer cost a year back--from a pittance to something in-line with most other communities. Why? The system was overloaded, grossly, and they needed to pay for collectors, transmission, and treatment. And, yet, the great unwashed complained. Why? Because the system was working. As an insider in that industry (water and wastewater), it was working...barely. One good storm (not unlike the one this weekend) and the CSO stations would start backing up...and lemme tell you this: Want to keep your property values up? MAKE SURE THERE ARE NO SEWAGE OVERFLOWS DUE TO AGING INFRASTRUCTURE IN YOUR COMMUNITY!

Ditto with water--if the current system can't keep up with the demand, shit's gonna happen, but it's something your average person doesn't want to pay for because most of the time, you turn on your faucet and, voila! Clean disinfected water. Might not taste that good because people don't want to pay for the extra treatment that Evian, arrowhead, and other companies do to their municipal water supplies, but the water system mostly works.

Further, with both, what does the end-user see? You pay millions in taxes for a water or wastewater upgrade, and before, the water system worked. After, the water system works the same. Same with wastewater. You flush the toilet and shit goes down the hole. After the upgrade? Shit still goes down the hole.

When aging infrastructure is not repaired it cost a lot extra--and more than just cleanup.

I agree with you in premise. I think that if Americans can take a bit of socialism and put their ingenuity to something other than the next shitty reality show du jure they could not only provide clean water to every American as well as irrigation and service water for industry, but also clean all wastewater and recharge all existing aquafers to keep the water flowing and in a cycle. They won't do it though--not in my lifetime.

Had a nice rain the last two days. Filled my water barrels up nicely. Gotta put some gutter on the other side of the house to collect more.

You can't be a person who thinks about conservation because you are just an old racist white guy. Old racist white guys think of nothing but keeping the poor, oppressed, and minority's down. How dare you.

I'm sorry. If anyone is interested in collecting rainwater for later use, there are many web sites which literally show you how to do it. You are only limited by the size of the cistern or number of rain barrels. I use the water collected to essentially water all my plants and trees in my back-yard with any excess going into the swimming pool.

Yeah, this old racist white guy collects water, collects sun, and drives a plug in car.

At least you finally had the courage to admit it.

Well isn't this fun, I get to shovel snow and cut the grass within a 3 week span.

And my native outdoor plants are growing.

Weird
