An elephant who only knew suffering his entire life is finally learning something new: love.

Raju has been held in spiked chains, often beaten or otherwise abused for 50 years. This past weekend, Wildlife SOS orchestrated a midnight mission to rescue Raju from the Uttar Pradesh area in India. Under the cover of night, a group of vets, wildlife experts and policemen finally freed the elephant as the clock rolled over into July 4, Independence Day.

And Raju responded with tears of joy.

"Raju has spent the past 50 years living a pitiful existence in chains 24 hours a day, an act of intolerable cruelty," Wildlife SOS spokesperson Pooja Binepal said. "The team were astounded to see tears roll down his face during the rescue. It was so incredibly emotional for all of us. We knew in our hearts he realized he was being freed."

He continued, "Elephants are not only majestic, but they are highly intelligent animals, who have been proven to have feelings of grief, so we can only imagine what torture half a century has been like for him."

"Very little is known about his early years but we believe he was poached from the his mother as a young calf," Pooja explains. From there Raju was sold as a tourist attraction, begging for coins with his trunk, without shelter, and only fed what passersby would give him, or whatever plastic or paper he could get ahold of.

"The chains around his legs had spikes which were cutting into his flesh—and each time he moved pus would ooze out of wounds. Pain and brutality were all he knew. His cruel handler even tore out the hair from his tail to sell as good luck charms," Pooja says. "The exploitation and abuse just had to stop."

For Raju, it has.

"Until we stepped in he'd never known what it is like to walk free of his shackles," Wildlife SOS points out. They brought Raju 350 miles away to the charity's Elephant Conservation and Care Centre at Mathura. There, all his chains were finally removed, he was given a bath, and a good meal.

"Today he knows what freedom is and he will learn what kindness feels like and what it's like to not suffer any more."

After Raju is rehabilitated, he will join two other elephants the charity has saved and live out his days in peace. And, at the end of the day, Raju's weren't the only tears: "We all had tears in our eyes as the last rope which held the final spike was cut," Pooja says. "And Raju took his first steps of freedom."

Wildlife SOS is now hoping to raise £10,000 to cover Raju's expenses, as well as to help build a new enclosure which will allow him to roam free with his adoptive family. You can donate to the campaign on their website.

Yes, the good side and bad side of humanity all in one story. Thank goodness we have groups like the SPCA around in America. Called them once on an animal cruelty issue in my neighborhood and they were out there the next day and sent me a follow up email informing me of what happened. Problem solved permanently.

I never thought I would use the words "disheveled" and "elephant" in the same sentence, but that is one seriously disheveled looking elephant.

Good on Wildlife SOS.

Saw this on Reddit earlier. Best comment / reply I saw....

Redditor 1 : "I wonder... does the elephant wonder why some of us torture him and others rescue him."

Redditor 2 : "It's not just the elephant wondering that"

I love animals. All of them. They're innocent creatures, and I tend to care about them more than humans. It transcends human differences for me, in that I look far more favorably towards conservatives who love animals than leftists who don't care about them. How a person views other living creatures is more important to me than how they view politics.

It's great that this big guy is going to get to live out the rest of his life in a secure, happy, plentiful environment.

I completely agree. Animals are a lot more nobler creatures than humans if you ask me.

I think some of you are a bit over the top here. To put animals before people is more than a little nuts. I certainly don't dislike animals but many of the wild ones will turn on ya quicker than any human. When I was younger I was more of an animal lover. Still am to a good degree just not over the top with it. I certainly don't advocate the torture of any animals or humans for that matter. If it's true what they say about elephants and their memory, I bet this one was saying where were you ******* for the past half century. I feel ya, Raju, I feel ya.

You do have an edge. I don't think that elephant would like you.

Turn on you in what way? Animals are actually very easy to understand. It's people that think animals are capable of human-isms that would say that "they turn on you". Which is sounds like you are one of those people.

The point was that animals are not really capable of maleficent, sadistic behavior that humans are. It's very easy to understand why animals attack humans, but would you care to try and explain why humans do the crazy shit/torture they do to animals (and other humans)?

I'm no hippy, but it's funny how some people think humans are a lot more important than they really are.

Hey, I dislike Mike Vick as much as anyone but where the hell are you trying to go with this? We've all see many stories about even domesticated pets turning on their owners and you're the one trying to make animals seem more humane than humans. I've never had a bad experience with a pet or animal of any kind, so, no, I'm not the one trying to humanize them or demonize them for that matter. I understand they are animals and not humans. It's you and several others in this thread who are more than a little out of touch, here.

I'm not going anywhere with it. I'm just making some comments relevant to the thread topic. That's what we're supposed to do, right?

And like I said, animals are easy to understand. Yeah, pets turn on their owners for logical reasons usually, like territory, food, fear, etc. You know, all the natural things...

Also like I mentioned, your use of the phrase "turn on humans" is improper. An animal will never turn on you if you understand it's an animal in the first place.

Unfortunately some people feel that they are above animals because the animals are not human, so they think they are worthless. Sad story but I'm glad Raju was saved.

Nobody is out of touch. People are just commenting on the story, as they do with any article that's presented in a thread. Most of us are happy to hear of the elephant being rescued from a bad environemnt and being given a good one, as anyone with an ounce of empathy towards other living things would be. It's pretty simple.

Animals are not self-destructive, love unconditionally, do not desecrate the planet, abuse their children, nor kill each other over personal differences.

Valuing animals over humans is simply a reflection on the depravity of man.
