"We talked about it early in spring training," Epstein said before today's game. "We indulged the questions. Right now we're just focused on the games and just going out and winning." Going on to discuss the team's general approach, Epstein indicated that the club would be cognizant of its place on the win curve in considering its options. "All contracts collectively form a market and you have to be aware of the market and operate in the market when you're in free agency, and it affects everything you do, to a certain extent. But we have to make smart decisions for our situation, for the situation we're in now and the situation we're going to be in in a few years."

I think if Samardzija starts hot (through his first 7 or 8 starts) the Cubs may feel the pressure to open talks back up and get a deal done.

Oh, I don't think they're shutting down trade talks...I think they're done talking about it to the public.

Awesome.

So now we will have another excuse as to why another player gets either traded away or allowed to leave because he doesn't want to be part of a rebuilding process.

Exactly how many players have to say they do not want to part of this situation before people grasp that the situation sucks?

They are going to trade Jeff Samardzija.

Don't be in denial over it. Its only a question of when.

How is pointing out that players don't want a part out this process is not trying to have an actual conversation?

You don't want to have any actual conversations with anyone who doesn't think this process is 100% the best thing and guaranteed success. Anyone who says anything else you just whine and cry that they need to be removed instead of contributing to the conversation.

I dont know, I dont think the Cubs can afford to trade Shark if he dominates the first half. I just dont see how they can justify letting a guy like him go. He would be hard to replace. If he takes that step this year, I dont think there is any way of Theo and them justifying trading him unless they get an Ace like potential pitcher plus for him.

I think it depends far more on the rewards being offered. If they are getting a Bradley + more type deal then perhaps it's worth while. If they are only getting one top 50 prospect and not much else then no way. In my opinion, they need to stand by the idea of 2 top 100 players and probably more because if you just keep him 2 years and then you throw a qualifying offer on him you get a likely 11-30 pick which should be a top 100 prospect.

It also depends on what Shark is expecting. IIRC he was looking for Bailey type money so I'd argue he has to pitch at least that well if not better given that he's pitched well in previous seasons only to falter later. At this point I think he'd probably need to be in the cy young conversation by the trade deadline in order for re-signing talk to be realistically an option given how far they seem to be apart.

Ive read a lot of things lately that Cubs really want Shark. Im reading that the stand off is Shark wants to know here this team is going. I heard he has softened on his terms and I bet he would a little bit more if he believed in what they are doing.

That is a big IF though on him wanting to be here.

He has already publicly stated he hasn't liked the process of major league players being traded for lottery tickets.

Not saying you're wrong, but do you have a link to that quote? I've heard he's been disgruntled in the past, but was under the impression it was over his next contract.

I'm sure they would like to tell him, but that kind of depends on how the middle of the lineup hits, doesn't it? :D

For someone who doesn't throw a temper tantrum over someone saying something negative about the process? Sure!

http://articles.chicagotribune.com/...rnational-signing-bonus-slots-steve-clevenger

ahh, ok. thanks. I saw that article - but paid little attention to it. It sounded to me like he was upset about some of his friends being traded. Feldman and Clevenger? It's not like those two were the first two pieces of the puzzle for the Cubs...I think most would say the CUbs likely won that trade even based on this year's roster...

That exactly what it was back in July of last season. Bitter about losing his friends.
He has spent the entire ST talking up the kids and his desire to be here when they come up.

Does it really matter WHY he was upset?

Bottom line he was upset at the process that was going on.

And Feldman had been on the team for what? Five months? How great of friends could they have been? It wasn't like they rode on the buses in the minors together.

They have had PLENTY of time to work out an extension and it hasn't happened yet.

Clearly there is something he doesn't like.
