Agent: Jake Dowell to become UF

The Chicago Blackhawks decided not to "qualify" center Jake Dowell making him an unrestricted free agent on July 1, according to his agent Neil Sheehy.

Qualifying offers were due at 4 p.m. CT Monday and Dowell is the lone Hawks' restricted free agent not to be qualified.

Qualifying a player guarantees the Hawks the right of first refusal and compensation if another team makes an offer to the player starting on Friday. It also ties the player to the club for one year with a potential raise using a formula based on the previous year's salary. Dowell, 26, made $550,000 in 2010-11. If he had been qualified he would be due a 10 percent raise.

The sides can still work out a short or long term deal in the meantime and Sheehy says a return to the Hawks as an unrestricted free agent is still a possibility.

As an unrestricted free agent on July 1, Dowell can sign with any team, including the Hawks. They made a similar move with defenseman Jordan Hendry last summer as he re-signed with the team for one year. Dowell played in 79 regular season games but only two of seven postseason contests. He had six goals and 15 assists but didn't score in his final 27 games of the year, including playoffs. Dowell led the Hawks with nine fighting majors.

The Hawks have three other restricted free agents: Michael Frolik, Chris Campoli and Viktor Stalberg. All three have been qualified, according to league sources. General manager Stan Bowman reiterated this past weekend, at the NHL draft, negotiating deals for his restricted free agents would be a priority beginning this week.

I hope someone signs Jake. He's a great guy with a real shit life story and could really use big league pay even if it is league minimum. I don't care for the Stahlberg bring-back. That guy is a cog at best.

His families story was in a magazine recently, SI or Hockey News. His dad and brother have a degenerative disorder and are really in a bad way. On top of that he may get it at some point too.

If Stalberg is working on his shooting this off season I guess he is worth another look. You need those wheels on a team but hell if he wasn't a one trick poney last season.

Willing to give Stalberg another chance I guess if he comes cheap (which he will).

Great news about qualifying Campoli and Frolik though.

As for Dowell. He doesn't belong here. Showed little improvement if any at all through the season last year. Infact i will go as far to say he actually became worse as the season moved forward and when we needed him to step up the most. Too bad. i am sure he is a nice kid. He will find action elsewhere I am sure.

This may sound dumb but Colin Fraser is going to be bought out by the Kings (if he hasn't been already). Would anyone take him back in the fold as a 4th line/bencher? I liked Fraser and his character while here.

Wouldn't you rather have Dowell though than Scott? Dowell > Scott. Both drop the gloves and at least Dowell can skate. Scott was just brutal out there - probably the worst Hawk I've seen in years. How this guy still has a job on this team is mind boggling. Maybe Q will put Scott on the PP again - jeez!

dowell can't fight. Nor is he intimidating. The team/players like Scott.

Two different roles in my mind. Scott intimidates...Dowell does not. And Dowell didn't play physical enough for my liking last season in the role he was given. Also don't think it's a situation with Scott where he is expected to see ice every night. The role that Dowell had though? Different story.

4th lines are still important to me at least. Don't think Scott nor Dowell are the answer there. But at least Scott can be infused into a lineup when intimidation is needed. That's a coaching job.

It would be nice to have a Ben Eager type back on the 4th line in my opinion.

I'd bring Colin back into the fold certainly.

Okay with him too. Just Eager might not be a good idea given his head is gone. Get Egenvi Artukin out of the KHL (I think) to round out our 4th line. that guy is an animal

Wow, I didn't realize this, Pete. All the more reason to root for him, hope he finds a new home somewhere.

I take Scott over Dowell, for the Hawks. I just get a kick out of him, frankly. I only seemed to notice Dowell last year when Foley would start to incorrectly identify him as Kane. Hopefully he gets another shot somewhere else and finds his niche.

The Dowells are stricken with Huntington's Disease. IIRC, Jake bonded with a terminally ill child in the area before he passed. I liked him because of that more than for his hockey play.

Jake Dowell is gonna be a FA!!!!

Glad to see Campoli is likely coming back... had some serious doubts about him and he proved me wrong.

While I have no source for this, by them not qualifying Dowell doesn't necessarily mean he will not be back in the organization.

Like Hendry last year, Dowell could be re-signed at a cheap contract on July 1st. Perhaps they just didn't want to give him his raise, and want him to see that he will not be coveted in this market.

Although I honestly doubt this is the scenario that will play out, it is possible and doesn't mean that Dowell's tenure in Chicago is finished.
