Ever Wonder Why So Many Posters Are No Longer Here?

Through the years we have run off some very good posters. Even as I write this some are considering never posting here again.

Why you ask?

Because some think that they can say whatever, do whatever without repercussions here. They hide behind their computer screen. Some can not debate with others that disagree with their point of view without throwing personal bombs at those who oppose. It is getting very old and the fact that the NHL is in lockout is likely to not help.

Maybe some here had their pacifiers in too long as an infant.

Like in all aspects of life people need to have thicker skin and realize this is, after all, the internet. I've met most people here. Ron and I go back and forth more than most people here but when we have met in person those arguments are put away. Its why I avoid political and religious talk with friends and family and in public. Too hot of a topic for most people to discuss without getting flustered. At the end if the day this is a "discussion" board and if you can't handle people disagreeing with you and things SOMETIMES getting a little heated, well, maybe discussion boards aren't for you. It is the nature of the beast. This is not directed at you personally by the way.

I would also like to state for the record that nothing I post is meant to be taken personally even if it comes off that way. I genuinely like everyone here. After all, we are all Hawks' fans. Im betting even those of us that disagree the most vehemently on here STILL have way more in common than not.

Dammit IHF, why did you have to go and call me out on my childhood unwillingness to get rid of the "dude" (what we called a pacifier). Come to think of it.......maybe that's the issue itself (calling it a dude).

I hope those same people know that there's an ignore feature on this site. That you can choose to ignore anyone you want, never have to see their posts again. You can choose to ignore anyone who doesn't agree with you or anyone that bothers you. If people can't deal with that, if they aren't adult enough to do that, go ahead and stop posting. No one cares.

I am new here. I have read a LOT of posts and have dared to make my own. I've gotten some responses that maybe I may not have liked much or even may have stung a bit, but I keep plugging away at it.

I have seen some "intense" discussions here but it hasn't scared me away. I try to post comments with a little though behind them than just firing off a post without considering the ramifications. Okay, so there was the Michael J. Fox joke I'm not to proud of but that's another issue.

I don't know you but I wish you consider staying.

Out with the old.....in with the new!!!!

There is nothing wrong with this board. It's less offensive than hanging out in a coffee shop with strangers to be honest. And at least here people are vocal about their ideals and beliefs. Half the shit we all say on these boards or debate about are things we wish we could say at out work places or with our colleagues, friends and family. But if we did we would feel the ramifications of being fired or thought less of. I actually find people more fake and artificial outside of the internet world than on it (including myself). This board sometimes becomes a venting machine and a steam releaser for some. That's when it gets to the levels of name calling etc. Im guilty of it to. Not proud of it all the time.

Its reasons like that why we left the O Boards in the first place.

Heaven forbid if I stated anything homosexual on the O Boards... that is... if I ever went back, and I don't intend on that ever.

Just keep this in mind........ that which you say freely can be quite offensive to others. While having the luxury here of saying what you really feel and think does not give one the freedom to assault and abuse others. We can respectful adults and while not agreeing with anothers stance does not mean that a person has the right to throw every name in the book at them nor to belittle them. Continuing to do so will further erode the membership here. Just sayin'

There are a list of quality and informative individuals that you no longer see on here. We should ask ourselves why that is? So that a few can be brash and bullies?

Kind of reminds me of this old topic above.

I understand your concerns IHF, but who are the "we?"

Are there some abrasive people here? Sure.

The question(s) comes down to how to make the site better, what kind of moderation, what subjects are talked about, who is welcome to participate.

It's a niche site that gathered long time Hawks fans to our own board. It's a community like the 300 Level and BHZ. About 300 of us coexisting (or trying to). All 300+ of us are all roommates to a certain degree. We can choose to get involved in every aspect, or choose to ignore one another and pick our battles.

You have said numerous times "it's just a hockey board," and by that account it's true. It doesn't lessen a topic in NHTA if someone has an opinion, but I don't feel that there's much that we're providing that's exclusive.

If the lockout happens, it's discussed on HF Boards, the officials, on Twitter, Facebook, or whatever social media you get your kicks on. Chances are that we aren't breaking any ground by what we're posting here. I don't think the NHL comes here that often to get IHN's view on Brent Seabrook, or gushes over one of our movie reviews in the entertainment thread. We're just a group of people. You might like the color green, and I like orange. So be it. It doesn't mean that I hate IHF for his opinion.

Some people have found alternate homes. Some people are annoyed at specific posters. I'm sure that I have said a few things that ruffle feathers from time to time, but it's not me hiding behind a computer-- nor do I think it's anyone else. I think if all of us were in a conference hall, we'd be saying the same things, but we would be probably laughing more and having a good time.

Most of the people here I have met in person. Everyone seems to have a good head on their shoulders, we just all come from different areas on certain topics.

You are absolutely right in that respect. I cringe, every time I see someone call someone an idiot or something along those lines. I may call an idea stupid or idiotic, but im not going to strait up attack the poster.

For me though I am the opposite. Posters that bug me, entice me to engage them more as opposed to wanting to leave.

Is there anyone that's not an adult here? Serious question. I don't think there is. So if someone is calling you names or if someone is saying something that you disagree with to the point of wanting to stop posting on an internet message board that you otherwise really enjoy, maybe, maybe instead of an open letter crying out for help, or a topic about how everyone is leaving, act like an adult and just ignore that person. Put that person or people on ignore and you never have to deal with it again. It's just....I don't see what the big deal is. It's easier to do that here than in real life and somehow we're still having problems with it.

I am though, curious...."who the posters are that are no longer here".

El Cid? With him I doubt it had anything to do with the topic.

Planzwrecker is another poster, dont know why he disappeared. But it was shortly after the site launched.

Mr. Miller never posted here much to begin with.

Kerfluffle got banned (although I personally didnt advocate it, I would have preferred it not so).

I am baffled as to who these posters are that "disappeared". I don't know, but posters leaving arent ringing a bell.

I am drawing a blank on anyone else.

Despite my previous comment I do second this. Yeah I dont like when people go into personal attacks, but really? leaving a message board because of it.

To IHF, there are those of us that very well dont agree with you but have no intention of launching personal attacks. Just slap those that do on ignore or report them if it bothers you. Supra put up that recent thread about basically zero tolerance on personal attacks. so tell a mod.

actually free speech does indeed give everyone the rights to make what ever remarks they want to. that's what freedom of speech means.

there is another freedom given to people. its one of being able to decide on their own will how to react to whatever is said. that's actually a more powerful freedom than any other which can be given and its never going away. It's that freedom which is the backbone of progressive change. And censorship of ANY form is NOT progressive change. Even if it's censorship of name calling.

insults are a part of life. if you are worried about what people say to your face imagine what they say behind your back without giving you the common decency to even defend yourself if you wish to. Thats more offensive than the things said to ones face and far more damaging.

we all throw stones. all of us. if people were more honest with themselves with regards to that we would get along much better. but ego is such a sensitive thing isn't it? I've come to learn that it's usually the ones that cry murder in cases like these who are the most guilty of all.....they just don't know it because they have limited self realization.
