My favorite teams
  1. Chicago White Sox
  2. Chicago Cubs
  1. Chicago Fire
  1. Chicago Bulls
  1. Chicago Bears
  1. Chicago Blackhawks
  1. Chicago State Cougars
  2. DePaul Blue Demons
  3. Illinois-Chicago Flames
  4. Loyola Ramblers
  5. Northern Illinois Huskies
  6. Northwestern Wildcats
So, we may be seeing a lot of expansion in the near future. The last time a major league expanded was MLS with the Impact de Montréal in 2012. MLS has added 9 teams since 2005, with another one announced already. The last expansion teams from other leagues were the NBA's 2004 Charlotte Bobcats, NFL's 2002 Houston Texans, CFL's 2002 Ottawa Renegades NHL's 2000 Columbus Blue Jackets and Minnesota Wild, and MLB's 1998 Arizona Diamondbacks and Tampa Bay Devil Rays. Seems like single-team additions have gotten more common. Now for the more modern stuff.

Canadian Football League:
-Ottawa Red Blacks begin play in Ottawa, Ontario in 2014
Major League Baseball:
-No current expansion rumors.
-Oakland Athletics still trying to relocate to San Jose, California.
Major League Soccer:
-New York City FC will begin play in 2015 in New York, New York (official), owned by Manchester City F.C. and New York Yankees. Will play at temporary venue before SSS constructed, likely Yankee Stadium.
-David Beckham and Marcelo Claure expected to exercise Beckham's $25M option for expansion team in Miami, Florida or Miami Gardens, Florida. Temporary venue at Florida International University or Sun Life Stadium. Could begin play in 2016.
-Orlando City SC rumored to enter league with new SSS in Orlando, Florida in 2016 with Miami. Contingency plan to SSS is temporary home at Florida Citrus Bowl Stadium.
-New York Cosmos still in talks with MLS. Unlikely with New York City FC and New York Red Bulls present.
National Basketball Association:
-Seattle SuperSonics rumored to make return in 2015 or 2016 in Seattle, Washington.
-Omaha, Nebraska rumored to be being looked at as a "companion" expansion team to Seattle.
-New Orleans Pelicans are the new name of the New Orleans Hornets of course.
-Charlotte Hornets will be the new name of the Charlotte Bobcats in 2014.
-Golden State Warriors plan to relocate to San Francisco, California.
National Football League:
-Los Angeles, California and Industry, California both moving forward with stadium plans for Los Angeles-area NFL franchises.
-London, England still a rumored site.
National Hockey League:
-Toronto, Ontario and Québec, Québec both have been rumored expansion sites, though talk has cooled down considerably despite uneven conferences. Seattle, Washington seemingly out of the picture for the time being.
-New York Islanders will move to Brooklyn borough New York, New York in 2015. Will play at Barclays Center.
-Phoenix Coyotes seemingly staying put.

So in the next 5 years, we could conceivably see: New York, Miami, and Orlando in MLS; Toronto, Québec in NHL; Seattle, Omaha in NBA;

MLS a major league :andruw:

Semantics... also depends on where you are. NHL is major here but not in the South. MLS is major in Cascadia (e.g. Seattle/Portland/Vancouver) and Philadelphia (examples) for damn sure, but not as popular around Chicago.

Can't really see an NBA team in Omaha.

I agree, dumb as shit move for a league already cluttered up with teams drawing 15K (8 teams under 16K). Wouldn't be Omaha's first team actually, see Kansas City-Omaha Kings.

Didn't know that, but I asked a couple of my friends about it too and they were like "Why? Nebraska doesn't have anything..."

Ya, hopefully they were simply looking at it, not strongly considering it.

OKC and Utah draw pretty good crowds for smaller markets. Can't see why KC/Omaha wouldn't be viable too. An NHL team would be more successful in KC than in Phoenix, IMO.

Seattle is first in line for a new NHL team. KC, Quebec City, Portland, Houston and Toronto are fighting over the second team. From what I've read, it looks like it might happen in 2-4 years.

Is it really that weird? I hope they don't become a team, I'd rather see Toronto get a second team. The Dallas stars have trouble drawing, Phoenix is a mess, the Panthers and Lightning absolutely blow at drawing fans. Southern cities don't like hockey, for whatever reasons (I have opinions but will keep them to myself).

I'd much rather see Seattle, Quebec City, Portland, KC or Toronto get teams... Citizens that love hockey.

I want Toronto and Quebec most. Seattle, Portland, or even Milwaukee would be good too. KC I don't mind.

Oh but it is all the ownership's fault fans don't come in Phoenix, remember? :troll:
